if your girls are shorter, the combi is awesome. plush, small and looks nice. we have that and a foonf because our toddler is a giant and we wanted the option to RF as long as possible.

Diono radian or graco 4ever (it's new) both seem great for smaller cars from what I have researched. Britax is huge!

The combi Cocorro is really small (they say you can fit three in the back seat of a car), and we really like it. It's really padded and comfortable looking.

We have two Radian Dionos for our girls and an infant seat for DS, so 3 across. We'll get a 3rd Diono when DS outgrows his baby seat.

DD1 has had hers for 2 years now, and she's 6.5 yo and not outgrowing it anytime soon yet. DD2 just got hers a few months ago and is still RFing at 3 yo and 1 month.

I just love how narrow they are... Not sure other seats would fit in our car (a small SUV) as nice. The Clek Foonf... I wanted to like it, but it was too tall for us.

I vote for the Radian! I haven't found the angle to be an issue for LO and she's on the petite side. She can still nap comfortably in it RF. My friend has a Honda CRV (same car I have) and she has THREE of them in the back and they fit perfectly.

Thanks ladies! Ugh, it's not looking good on the passenger space. It's really just one long trip for me in the middle of the back seat of my parents' Kia (they're helping me move). Once the seats are in my car, I don't expect to have many passengers, since generally we'd want to transport a couple (like grandparents), not just one extra person.

@jhd: thanks for weighing in on the guide 65 - I'm glad it has worked for you (and with a really little baby.). Does your little one feel really secure in it? I read some reviews that thought it was big for infants.

@shopaholic: I'm glad to hear you like the Pria - I'm a big maxi Cosi fan. If I use the Mico for awhile before switching to two Prias, that would let me leave my two year old rear facing awhile longer (she's only 23 lbs).

@blackbird: I hadn't considered the foonf. I'll take a look

@tororojo: I've heard Radians are the narrowest, but had the same concern as @foodnerd81: regarding the rear facing positions. The seat seems really tall and upright for tiny kids.

The annoying part I forgot to mention? Long term, I want to have two of the same seat. It will drive hubby bonkers if they don't match. So I can start with a capsule for now for the baby, but will out her in the same seat her sister has in six months or so.

I have a smallish SUV - a CRV - and use two behemoth Britax Advocates. They fit great, I was able to rear face both with plenty of room for the driver and front passenger. Not so much room, however, for a passenger in the center back seat.

We took our Britax Marathons (from my husband's car) on vacation this summer and found the fit much tighter in our rental Chevy Traverse. The rear-faced seats were jammed against the back of the driver and passenger seats.

The Marathon and Advocate seem to be the same size front to back, while the Advocate is wider.

We love our Radian! They don't have cupholders on the side so the profile is extra narrow, making 3 across or 2 and a grownup very doable. I have also had the Radian in the middle and a Britax convertible beside it in our Corolla, and that leaves plenty of room for someone else in back. Diono sells an angle adjuster for the Radian that sits it more upright in the RF position, which made it fit better in my small car. You couldn't use it w/an infant, but in a few months you could with your younger one. (Angle adjuster is like $10ish on amazon and worth every penny!)

I really love my Graco MyRide. It's kind of wide, but the MySize/Size4Me/Fit4Me are narrower. They are also fairly compact rear-facing. Ours fits well in my Versa without making the front passenger (me) uncomfortable.

I've heard the Britax ones are pretty wide. Diono radian and foonf are the narrowest, but I found the diono to be way too log front to back rf to for in our smallish sedan. We got the chicco next fit- I think a very small adult could fit between two? There was a peg perego one that is supposed to be narrow a well.

We have the britax marathon, another britax, and two Graco my ride 65's and no combination of any of them leaves room for a third passenger in the backseat of our SUV.

Kicking myself for not paying attention to that, because it blows!

Not sure about your car, but our Maxi Cosi Pria has a Tiny Fit system which would allow your LO to be in the convertible seat from the beginning. My sister also has the Pria, and we have put both girls in the back of a sedan and the back of a 4Runner and it's doable. They are wide though. I wouldn't want to sit in between or next to them for a long ride, but it's possible.

Dione radians are one of the narrowest (if not the narrowest) seats on the market, so they would leave you with a lot more room for a potential passenger then the Britax seats would!

We're moving, buying a car for the first time since having kids, and thus need to get carseats for DD1 (25 months) and DD2 (3 months). I'm looking for advice on what seats will fit in the back of a smallish SUV with room for an adult passenger if necessary. I think both seats will need to be rear facing to start with.

I'm currently considering Britax Marathons (they seem to be what everyone I know has), Maxi Cosi Prias (we have a Mico infant capsule and love it), or possibly a cheaper model like the Safety 1st Guide 65, although I'm wondering if that one is as "good" as the others. The Safety 1st model seems to be the smallest, which is good in my case. My girls are petite, so I'm not as concerned with very high weigh/height limits.

Thanks in advance for any help - I'm ordering from overseas so it's hard to take my kids into a store to try out seats, since where we live most seats sold are UK models.
