Our litter box is in the front room of the house inside a bench that has a cut out hole. Cats can entertain each other, which is nice. Ours are totally indoors-cats that go outdoors bring more junk in. Fungus, germs, pollen, etc.

Sucks about his allergies though-what about the shots?

DH has allergic family members-I vacuum the couches and sweep before they come over. So far no problems

I just called my mom and asked her how bad it would be and she said they wouldn't be able to come over at all. I asked if there was medicine he could take and mom said yeah, but it would knock him out. Which would be counter productive. So I guess no kittens. Still need DH's confirmation.

@jh524: We were going to get two so they would have someone to play with. And they would be siblings.

We put out kitty litter box in the room With the water heater that's under the stairway.we installed a kitty door. The hole in the fence seems like an easy fix, just block it with something, mesh or chicken wire. But your fathers allergy issue seems more of a hinderance than anything...I mean If he doeasnt visit much and you can Fix those minor problems then I'd say go for it. Cats are the best furry friends ever!!! Oh and maybe just start w one kitty and see how that goes....

@NaturallyCathy: You can also put the gate up a little higher, so that the kittens can scoot under it, also.

@Dandelion: @NaturallyCathy: Our litter boxes live in the upstairs bathroom. They do just fine not having one on the ground floor. They jump a gate to get up there. Ours are both inside-only too.

Cats will jump baby gates. Not when they are tiny, tiny but they will. You're supposed to slowly introduce them into each room in your house anyway. When you first get a kitten, you should designate one room as "their" room, for at least the first couple weeks until they get acclimated to a new house and a new family. It helps them feel secure and it will reduce mess while you litter-train them.

Also, I don't think a hole in the fence is a huge deal. The cats are going to jump the fence anyway. I don't see why they couldn't still be indoor-outdoor cats.

@Dandelion: That's good to know. I figured as much but the last time I had a kitten I was five and it lived at my granparent's house but it was 'my' cat.

@NaturallyCathy: They can jump over gates. Not right away, but they will before you know it. I have the room their litter box gated off because of the dogs. They don't see it as a barrier at all.

Mine are both inside only. Their litter box is in the utility room. I wasn't going to get rid of them because of a baby, and I would have no problems adding more, except for the litter box gets out of hand with more than 2 cats. So, we have dogs! lol

You know I say go for it, lol. But, I'm an animal person. I agree with all of @zippylef:'s points.

@zippylef: I figured the cats would run but with two doors shit and one room gated, they would be limited to where they could run to. Even he stairway has a gate so they wouldn't be able to escape that way! And we would have to put the food and water bowl either outside on the porch or in my office or somethin since there are no gates in the kitchen.

@Sweet T: I'm sure he could but it would be like a bomb - a big fat red number counting down, limiting how long he can stay and play with his grandkids. He's really very badly off in the allergy department. We have a good family friend who is the same way and he wouldn't be able to visit either.

I mean, we could make it work. My parents don't come over very often right bow but they're hoping to be over more in the future. If we tried to do any house projects we wouldn't be able to ask for their help if it took very long. Can't host holidays for my side of the family like DH and I were discussing on doing. Just... Sad

@Smurfette: You're probably right. I just feel bad because I'm the one who brought up the kittens in the first place. I feel like I offered candy and took it away in the same token.

I would wait and I am not just saying that cause I am not a cat person. DH is allergic as well and our good friends have two. He has to be so careful at their house otherwise his eyes gets puffy and we have to go. If your Dad is that allergic it doesn't seem worth it to me.

I would probably wait. I'm more of a dog person but we recently discussed getting a cat because DS loves them. We were worried about keeping him away from the food and litter box. I didn't think it would be fair to the cat to lock these things away and for the cat to end up there too. As far as allergies go, does your dad have allergy pills like @zippylef mentioned? That would also affect my choice.

We adopted our first kitten when C was 4 months and the kitty was 9 weeks old and the 2nd when she was 6 months and the kitty was 7 weeks old.

"Saving" them from the kids isnt really necessary. They'll run off it they dont want to be pet. Thats what ours do. Our ginger cat learned pretty quickly to stay away from C while the other one doesnt care and hangs out with her. Shes just now old enough that she gets the concept of "soft touches" and she can actually pet them.

The food and water bowls are just another learning curve. We've kept ours in our kitchen behind a baby gate until recently. C is learning not to play in them. Im sure she has injested cat food but i figure its not going to kill her.

They will sleep wherever they feel like sleeping. Lol. You cant really determine that because they wont listen.

As from the allergies, my friend is really allergic and she is able to come to our house. She takes an allergy pill beforehand and doesnt touch them.

I dont see any of your husbands issues as real issues.

The facts: DH and I just bought our new-old house three months ago. Because of air conditioing - or rather the lack of it - upstairs when have been forced to have our new family of four libe downstairs. H has his own room (16 months old); Em sleeps in the bedroom with us (3 months old). We usually keep three of the seven downstairs room closed/gated and let H have the run of the rest of the house.

The situation: A friend of our neighbor has kittens available on a refular basis for free. Not because he breeds them but because he takes in stray cats and finds them homes. Occassionally they just happen to have kittens. Life happens. Well I told this neighbor's friend we wanted two of them at some point. I figured they could be half inside kitties, half outside kitties. Dh agreed. They could live on the back porch, we'd install kitty doors, etc.

Neighbor's friend sees me yesterday. Asks me if I'm ready for a few kittens. I say sure and tell DH. He gets concerned. Kittens are social creatures, he said. They need interaction. There's a hole in the backyard fence. There's no garuntee they'll stay with us and not escape. Don't get him wrong, he wants the kittens he just wants to be fair to them. So he wants them to be inside cats.

This creates a whole new level of problems. Where would we put the litter box for starters. Or their food and water out of H's way? How do we 'save' them from H (tail pulling, hard patting, etc.)? Where would they sleep? And best of all, what about my dad? If we have cats my father can't visit his grandchildren because he's really allergic! We'd alienate my father!

To me it seems like we can't get kittens not just now but ever because we'll keep hitting this problem. But DH is a cat person. I like both. Anyone have any bright ideas or opinions on what to do? I have to have an answer by tomorrow morning and sleeping on it hasn't clarified anything.
