@Ms.Mermaid: Thanks! I'll take a look at that program, which would probably be better than doing the one I found.

Thanks everyone! You've been so helpful! I love hellobee!

@TemperanceBrennan I'm terrible at math and somehow only got to four miles. Truthfully, I'm not a big fan of run-walk programs since I could never stick to one and only started running when I would run for a mile straight and then step up and add more mileage slowly, but usually without walking, and without walking on a specific plan. (I'm not a very efficient runner.)

This is an adapted couch to 5k program - http://weonlydothisonce.com/824/how-to-go-from-couch-to-5k-in-one-month/ that might be helpful.

@Ms.Mermaid: Thanks! I think I can fit around $100 in my budget, so hopefully they can work with that. Glad to know to just ask for running shoes so I don't sound too silly.

I did the Couch to 5K program about two years ago and I liked it, but the 5K is in 5 weeks so I looked for a similar training schedule. I summarized in my initial post - I did do the exact workout from the plan: walk 1 mile, run 2 minutes every half mile until you reach 3.5 total miles, walk 0.5 mile. This fall I walked a lot (about 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day), but I've definitely slowed down this winter.

@spaniellove: Great idea about yoga poses! I looked up pigeon pose and I'm sure that will help. Thanks!

@TemperanceBrennan: I usually spend about $120 on shoes. I am getting back into running, and good shoes mean that my shins don't hurt. Plus, spending that kind of money on shoes shames me into running on days I don't want to.

While you are there, you should try a pair of socks out too! Cotton socks = major blisters.

@TemperanceBrennan: Haha. When I felt like one hip especially felt tight and sore and nothing else (foam rolling, etc) was helping, my yoga instructor showed me hip opening poses that were helpful. I think the pigeon pose was especially helpful for me and when I mentioned it to my husband, who does marathons, he told me his PT makes him do that.

@TemperenceBrennan Basic isn't really a word in the running shoe world. There are running shoes and race shoes. Pretty much everything else is a matter of personal preference. I generally spend between $100-130 on my shoes. You can be upfront about your budget and they might have some clearance shoes, etc. I actually ran in Avia sneakers from Kohls for awhile until I got properly fitted - I definitely had some issues, like once I accidentally bought trail runners that were too small, so I wish I had gotten fitted sooner, but it wasn't something I needed to do the minute I started running.

I think the high mileage is the likely culprit. Four miles is what the training plan says, and that's a lot to start with, I think. How much do you walk regularly? Couch to 5k is a much more entry-level plan that you might want to check out.

@avivoca: Just regular old running shoes I've had for years but they're in great condition because I never run
You're right though that I should probably get some real shoes that were fitted for me.

I might go at lunch, how much would a good basic pair of running shoes cost? $50, $100, more?

I am no expert (on my second go-around of C25K) but I think shoes may be an issue. I don't have issues with my hips but I do with my knees, and I think it's a combination of bad form, shoes and just general weakness. I rest at least one day after every training session and if my knees hurt really badly, I give it another day or so. I will run when they're a little sore, but not too bad, and I don't know if I'm self-correcting or getting stronger or what, but eventually as the days/weeks pass, everything sorts itself out and the pain subsides.

@Beebug: I generally hate running, but I swim at least 3 times a week (sometimes up to 5 times a week) for an hour, so I feel somewhat fit, but my muscles are not used to running.

I'm using this training schedule: http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/running/training-schedules/beginner-training-plan-6-weeks-to-a-5k/

Yesterday was an off day and today I'm supposed to walk 3-5 miles so maybe I'll just take it easy and see how I feel. Thanks for your help!

What shoes are you using? Did you get fitted for them or did you pick up a pair somewhere? How old are they? If you weren't fitted, I highly recommend going to a running store and getting help picking out shoes. The staff will be extremely knowledgeable about the types of shoes available and what will fit your needs and body/stride type.

ETA: You should go to a local running store, not someplace like Dick's/Shoe Carnival/any department store.

Are you starting from scratch, or have you already been close to 5 mi in training (run/walk). If no, I would decrease your overall distance bigtime. Nothing worse than over doing it, and getting hurt physically and that discouraging you mentally over time.

What training schedule are you following?

I wouldn't worry too much about the schedule at this point, listen to your body. I would work out again while still sore, but not do the distance you did previously. Do enough to say you got out, worked, and ended on a positive. Hips hurting may not be form, just being over worked if this is a new or different form of exercise for you.

I started training for a 5K on Monday - went 5 miles total with running for 2 minutes every half mile. My hips are so sore! Nothing else feels too bad. My feet don't hurt and my calves are just a tiny bit sore/tight. I'm guessing the reason my hips hurt so badly is because of bad form. I tried looking up how to correct it, but a lot of what I found online went over my head.

Is this common? Does anyone have any tips to reduce the stress on my hips?

Also, should I still work out while I'm sore or wait a few days? I don't want to wait because then the training schedule will be off, but I don't want to push myself too hard at the beginning.
