We got one that is two-sided although not for that reason and flipped it pretty early on, partly because he has plagiocephaly and I just couldn't stand the thought of his head getting flatter from his sleeping position.

We got a one sided mattress for about 30 bucks and when LO was a year, we got a great mattress topper from amazon that made her crib much more comfy.

@Bluemasonjar: we flipped ours once LO hit the weight limit of the infant side and was standing in his crib regularly (the toddler side has a special rim to it).

Mine is the same on both sides, firm enough for an infant. I actually wish we had a softer toddler side. C is 18 months and was having trouble sleeping in her crib but would sleep fine on the much softer bed in her room (with Dh or me in the bed with her). I just layered a very thick fleece blanket under her crib sheet and she started STTN again. I think a toddler side would have worked- though, the blanket is working and I'm not concerned about safety since she is old enough for blankets and stuff.

We flipped ours when we moved to a toddler bed at 21 months. I assume we will continue to be in a toddler bed for at least another year before moving to a twin (and he's now 26 months), so we will definitely get use out of it. I'm not sure I feel a huge difference in comfort, but I'm not the one sleeping on it! If you plan to move straight from crib to twin (or whatever), though, one side is probably fine. My little guy is also super tiny (off the charts), so he'll fit in his toddler bed a lot longer than many kids will (and until we move next year, I'd prefer not to do a twin as my two will share a pretty small room.)

I was wondering the same thing. I had not idea how expensive crib mattresses were until I just started searching. Would love to know if it is worth it.

We got it and oops, never really flipped it. Honestly, I can't even tell which side is which. They sleep on it just fine though, whatever side we are using. Lol sorry that's not very helpful.

We've decided on a crib mattress, but I'm debating if we should get the two-sided version that we can use for both infant and toddler stages. The two-sided version is a bit more expensive, but I'm thinking it's probably cheaper than buying a separate toddler mattress down the road.

If you had a two-sided mattress, at what age did you flip it and do you feel you got enough use out of it before moving onto a bigger bed/different mattress?
