I could have written your exact post a year ago after my daughter was born (had no issues with her older brother). I was also told to supplement 1-2 oz at each feed (breastmilk if I had any and formula, if I didn’t). I thought for sure that would be the kiss of death to my supply. I did breastfeed first each time and then give the expressed breastmilk/formula after and after a week or so of that routine, her weight gain started to improve and my ped allowed me to try exclusive breastfeeding again with the plan to come in for a weight check after a few days. My daughter was just such a sleepy newborn and my ped explained that it was a cycle that because she was hungry and low energy that it just made her too sleepy to eat. I tried my best to pump when she got a bottle but I didn’t do that for night feedings. Honestly, my supply was fine and we went on to have a great nursing relationship after that. I do credit my ped to helping me find a way to successfully nurse despite the initial issues. Also, you mentioned you are weighing at home. When they weigh so little, you really can’t compare weighings on different scales. My ped made me use the same scale every time we did a weigh in. I’d try to focus on the wet diapers versus weigh-ins or you’ll drive yourself crazy. Good luck. This too shall pass!

We had a rough start brestfeeding. My son lost weight in the hospital, gained weight, but then didn’t gain enough. It was super stressful!!! We went to the LC several times, supplemented, pumped, etc. There was a lot of crying! Some things that helped me at the time- exclusively pumping for 24 hours to see how much I got. I know everyone says that baby is more efficient than a pump BUT it was good for me (mentally) to see that I was making milk. I also went to a breastfeeding support group at my hospital and did weighted feeds there to see how much he was transferring. Things got better as he got bigger/older. I honestly think that he was just burning too many calories nursing. Hang in there- it’s so hard! See if you can squeeze in some naps.

This happened to my SIL. Have you been to a lactation consultant to check for a tongue tie? Once they figured out what was wrong they were able to nurse just fine for as long as they wanted. Even if it isn't a tongue tie, it is sometimes helpful to have another set if eyes and to do a weighed feeding to see how much you are getting in her.

Good luck!

ETA: I just saw you checked about the tongue tie. You might want to ask your friend and your ped to check again. My neices wasn't diagnosed until the 5th person looked in her mouth.

@ShootingStar: I haven’t tried massage while feeding her I will add that!

@looch: my son had a tongue tie so that was the first thing we asked the ped an hour after she was born. Fortunately she does not have it although I almost wish she did because it would explain so much! I had an over supply with my son though even with the tongue tie (which wasn’t corrected for three weeks) so this is baffling to me.

I had the same problem with my 2nd. She nursed ALL the time. I was shocked to find out at her 1 week appointment that she wasn’t gaining enough. Our ped told us the first 15 minutes or so are when the baby takes in the mist. She had me massage the side DD was nursing on to increase the amount coming out. She also suggested I try popping her off after 20 minutes. She said sometimes babies just comfort nurse and get tired and don’t take in much. So while it felt like she was eating all the time, she wasn’t taking in all that much milk and she was expending a lot of calories doing it.

They had me come back in a few days for a weigh in and DD was doing a little better and the ped seemed happy.

@smores: thank you! That means so much  because sometimes I feel like I am falling apart at the seams. It is a lot to balance. The PA I have been seeing is thankfully a coworker, friend and certified Lactation consultant. She just hasn’t offered a lot yet because I think she thought things would straighten out on their own. I have a full consult scheduled with her for Monday so I am sure we will go over a lot but in the meantime I’m just worried :bummed:

I am so sorry you are struggling! Everything is so much more frustrating when you are sleep deprived - you are doing a great job!

Have you reached out to a lactation consultant or are there any La Leche meetings in your area? They can weigh the baby before and after a feeding to see how much they are taking in while nursing.

My first was always small - never gained too much he was under the 5th%...and he's still small! My doctor said as long as his growth is consistent and follows "his" curve.

I hope others chime in bc I have seen some really great, supportive answers to other moms who struggle with breastfeeding. Just know that you are doing a great job!

I breastfed my son 4 years ago very successfully. My labor and delivery was rough and I ended up with an emergency c-section but perhaps because I had labored so long (2 1/2 days) my milk came in almost immediately. I had a slight problem getting him to gain weight in the beginning and was told to supplement with formula. We tried but were honestly not that successful since he nursed all of the time and it was tough to fit in. Despite this he eventually caught up to his birth weight by about 2-2.5 weeks. My daughter was born two weeks ago via planned c section, however, and we are having a much tougher time. She dropped from 7lbs 9 oz to 6 lbs 15 oz within the first four days. At her one week appointment she was only 7 lbs .5 oz and we were told to supplment with 2 ounces a day. We did but when we went back 5 days later she had only gained 2oz. Now we were told to supplement 1-2 oz at each feeding. I am having a tough time fitting this in as she nurses practically around the clock but the doc said to just do our best. On top of it I am still trying to fit in pumping, I am only averaging 4 hours of sleep and I am exhausted. The first day I was able to get 6 extra oz in her and the second day 3 oz. I weighed her today (we are technically 3 days in now) and it appears she hasn’t gained an ounce. I am so frustrated. I am literally doing the exact same things I did with my son but getting very different results. I am doing my best but not getting anywhere and it is so frustrating. I am feeling engorged after three or four hours. She is producing a large amount of wet and dirty diapers, I let her nurse as long as she wants, I am able to pump 1-2 oz after a feeding and she seems a lot more content than she did in the beginning. All signs with the exception of her weight point to her doing well so I am baffled and beginning to lose hope. Anyone have issues like this? I am seriously beginning to wonder if I will just be unable to produce enough this time or if something else is wrong and am beginning to get stressed about the whole thing (and we all know that doesn’t help! )
