We upgraded from the 3-wheel Micro Mini scooter to the 2-wheel. Love it.

This probably isn’t much help because 8yo DS has a 2 wheeled scooter from a store that isn’t in the US, but I can recommend features to look for. It has pretty large wheels and is very smooth. It’s actually an adult scooter, but with the handlebars all the way down, it’s perfect for him. I’ve even ridden it and it’s very comfortable. It also has a hand break and foot break.

My almost-7 year old is overdue for an upgrade to her 3-wheel toddler scooter (in part so that DD3 can start using it, but also just because she's getting too tall for it). Any brand/model recommendations?

I have three daughters, so don't mind spending a bit more for something that works well if there's truly a difference since it will be handed down. I absolutely felt that the Y-Bike/Micro Mini 3-wheel scooters were significantly smoother/easier to steer than cheaper scooters like Radio Flyer, but not sure if the same is true of the two-wheel variety. Thanks!!
