@PinkElephant: Just came back to see if you had attempted teaching this?

I finally got around to it last night and he got it in about 15 min!! After about 5 min in I texted my mom frustrated thinking he wouldn’t get it. Her tip was to have him put the shoe on his foot. I had him do this and he got it after a couple more tries!! We were using my runners so I hadn’t thought to have him put it on.

We did the two bunny ears.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I think I learned how to tie my shoes at school around 6. I remember a day where they were teaching us. I have never been able to do the one bunny ear way. I have done 2 bunny ears my whole life. I used to get embarrassed if I thought someone was watching me do it because I was the only person doing it that way.

@poppygirl15: this is cool, but they wouldn’t be able to untie them themselves after which would be frustrating. I’m already concerned about teaching my kid to tie her shoes now! Laces are the worst.

@Bluebonnet: genius! I may look into this. There are some things that give me great satisfaction to show/teach my children because they are bonding moments...I suspect this isn't one of them :silly:

@graceandjoy: Yeah, same - even my tie shoes I just slip on and off! My almost-7-year-old is small so we might squeak by one more year...but I'm told by friends that the struggle is real at/after size 13 to find non-tie shoes their daughters like.

@poppygirl15: Thank you so much! I'm definitely trying this. After watching, I feel like I saw a video on this awhile back, and had totally forgotten it. It's way easier than the traditional methods!

@poppygirl15: that hack is so cool!

DD is 5.5 and doesn't know. And embarrassingly, I struggled SO hard with just one bunny ear and cannot do it that way to this day.

Hi! I taught my daughter a way to tie her shoes by showing her the hack shown in this video. My DD is 6 and we'll eventually show her a "correct" or old-school way to tie her shoes, but this is super easy for her to do right now.

@PinkElephant: My biggest tip is to find a shoe tying class in your area and have someone else teach LOs to tie their shoes. Our Nordstrom’s and local children’s shoe store both have shoe tying classes and my kids learned to tie their shoes in an hour (after multiple unsuccessful attempts at learning from DH and me).

DD1 is 4.5 and I have never bought her shoes that need laces to tie to begin with, lol. Heck I currently don't even own shoes I need tying haha! I am totally saving this for later!

We got DD1 this book for Christmas, she was wanting to learn how to tie shoes. It’s been great, she practices with it and can tie the laces in the book and can allllllllllmost get her shoes tied by herself- if her shoe laces were a little longer, she could do it on her own.

My son learned with the book "Tie your shoes with Mickey' that we got at a Scholastic book fair. Thought it was pricy but it does have 2 colors lace (daycare taught him) and that's all he needed. it took him a few tries.

https://www.amazon.com/Tie-Your-Shoes-with-Mickey/dp/0545612888

My son (now 6) has been able to tie his shoes and read time (even without numbers on the clock) but cannot blow his nose....

@Chuckles: @Becky: Thanks! I really like the idea of two different colored laces!

@KT326: @ALV91711: @Anagram: Glad it's not just us! I mean, there's really been no reason (and kind of still isn't), for her to know, but she's going to "big kid" school (grades 2-5) next year, so I just want her to go feeling big and not like a baby, ya know?

@Becky: Great idea to start with one or two steps at a time. We have been doing that with our son, too. It helps the kids feel successful and prevents too much frustration. So he knows how to do the first couple steps, he attempts the next step, and then we do the end.

My 5.5 y/o just learned how. I was TERRIFIED to teach her because she gets incredibly upset and frustrated, but she wanted to learn so we did it. I don’t think videos would be helpful. What I did was to sit next to her (as opposed to in front of her because the view would be wrong), and then show her each step. So I’d show her a step (like step 1, cross the laces), then undo it and have her do it. Then I’d add another step, undo it, and have her do those 2 steps. We added steps until we had all of them done. We did this until all the steps were done. She hated it and screamed and cried but that’s just the way she is (she used to sit at the table and cry over puzzles and refuse help).

We tried 1 and 2 bunny ears and 1 was way easier.

For opposing dexterities, you could maybe just sit across from each other?

One thing that can help is using two different colored laces and lighter colored laces to help see what's happening with the loops more clearly.
Does anyone have a feeling about whether the two bunny ears or one bunny ear is better for beginning learners? I've tried a little with my almost 6 year old, but I'm really going to try to work on it this summer.

I've tried with my almost-6 year old, and she still can't do it. I mean, by "tried", I sat down once or twice and tried to show her.

My issue is, she's a lefty and I am a righty, so when I show her, I show her how I do it, and then she struggles. But when I try to reverse it, like use my left hand, then I struggle. I've seen some hacks that work with sneakers, but we also have some mary Jane type shoes that have a strap with a tie (for the cute bow effect) and we tried the hack on those, and it doesn't work.

Any tips on teaching kids (5 & 7) to tie their shoes? Particular methods, YouTube videos, songs, etc. that were helpful? I realized that we are way behind the curve on this one, and my oldest may move into size 13 shoes this summer, meaning fewer slip on/elastic options and more need to tie her own shoes, particularly athletic shoes.

Thanks!
