Both! It really depends, sometimes Uber is easier to get (like, during shift change. Or, cabs didn't ever go down my residential street in my prior Manhattan apt, so we either walked 2 blocks to Broadway or called an uber) and it can be cheaper. Plus, it's much more comfortable usually--the brakes on taxis are terrible most of the time!

I'd have Uber ready just in case too. Cabs are everywhere but you'd be surprised how hard it is to get one sometimes! And I def love the predictability and cleanliness of Uber! One time the driver gave me a bottle of water!

There's also an NYC taxi app called Way2Ride that lets you "call" yellow/green (in the boroughs) taxis the way you would call an Uber. Similar to Uber, you can link the app to your cc and pay through the phone so you don't have to swipe your card in the taxi.

I live in NYC and I use both interchangeably. I would definitely make sure you have the Uber app because even though hailing yellow cabs is easy, there are many times when it is impossible to get a cab e.g. Daily shift change, if it rains etc.

Additionally Uber X can be cheaper than cabs and definitely cleaner and guaranteed to be air conditioned. All this to say that most New Yorkers use both, why choose!!!!

The only exception is the ride from tge airport, I would stick with a yellow cab as the rules about pick ups with Uber etc mean you have walk quite a bit to a point where you can get it, not worth it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Do you know you can share your uber trip information by email? On the rare occasion I use uber by myself, I always share my info with my husband and my mom. It gives them the driver's name, car info, and a gps tracking of the car I am in. I always tell the driver that I'm sharing the info. That makes me feel fairly safe.

Uber!! Cars are clean, drivers are pleasant, and the fare is cheaper. I also like the fact money is not change exchanged with the driver.

Now that I know Uber's background checks did not catch certain criminals I would only use Uber if I was with my husband.

Uber. Cars are cleaner, you know when the car is coming, the drivers are better, price is comparable. Uber all the way.

I think uber is easier, you can search locations of cars, you get the make/model/license plate and you don't have the issue of needing to go downtown at the time of a shift change and no one will pick you up.

As far as I know, we'll be in manhattan the whole time (DH made dinner reservations for tomorrow that will be a surprise to me, but I doubt we'll be leaving downtown).

Thanks all! I had a feeling I was right :) At least now I can tell DH I checked with folks in the city.

If you're out and about you shouldn't have trouble getting a cab. For your airport drop off or if you have diner reservations or will be in a less trafficked part, Uber.

I got lost in Jamaica, near Queens, and it took me ages to find a taxi. But in Manhatten I had no problem. And the subway is super easy to use too. Depending on where you're staying it might even work for when you arrive.

Enjoy your trip!

I use Uber all of the time, even though I live in a suburb. Its cleaner, easier, no money passes hands (unless you want to tip). But like bluestripedbee says, hailing a taxi in NYC might be faster than using uber. I've not been to NYC since I started using uber. That being said, when I do return to NYC, I will certainly try my best to use Uber over a taxi. If the location is too far to walk, then it would be worth the wait for uber in my honest opinion. Have fun and lucky you! I love NYC!

Uber! Cleaner and just as reliable! Except they don't do pickups at airport! Just fyi! Some rule about not being allowed legally... They do dropoffs though! There are times that they charge 2x fare etc. but you just have to play around with the app for a few min, to get the normal rate. Regardless, so much cleaner and more efficient than taxis in my opinion.

I was in NYC in May and last Nov and exclusively used uber aside from airport pickup (and subway use) and I used a car service for that ended up being cheaper than a yellow cab too. (40$ to Chelsea in traffic time).

I like that it's tied to my paypal where I keep my ebates fun money etc. there's a lot of codes for free rides too.

That was my thinking (that taxis would be easier), but DH seems to think Uber would be cheaper? I think *maybe* for a ride to/from the airport (if it's not peak time)...but I can't imagine it would be cheaper within the city...

I would use a taxi.

Also, from the airports in NYC, depending on where you're going it's a published flat rate. Not so with Uber, so Uber could be much more $$$$

If I'm in a city with taxis that are widely available, I would go with getting a taxi.

I've used uber once but I was in an industrial complex and I was told that uber is more reliable than taxis.

DH and I are going to NYC for the weekend, and he wants to download and use Uber, but for a city like NY, I wonder if taxis might just be easier for most things?

I think to and from the airport Uber might be helpful, but just a spontaneous trip for a meal or whatever, I feel like cabs would be just as handy (especially if it's during a time that Uber would surge pricing).

But because we live in suburbs and usually drive ourselves anywhere, we rarely take taxis or car services so don't really know.

What's your preference?
