It'll cost you $100 just for someone to even come out and tell you what's wrong with it never mind the costs of parts and labor. And if it's older it could just keep having more issues. I would just pay the $400 for a new one.

I feel you. Our dryer broke yesterday! I had a wet load in the dryer and another in the washer. Ended up hang drying everything. :bummed: I looked on CL and used gas dryers were going for $200. No knowing when it'll go kaput on us. We've been together 15 years and have only had used and hand me down washer and dryers! We hit the bullet and bought a set today. Lowes has a really good sale and if you have a lowes card they are offering 18m 0% financing.

@macintosh: the last time our washer broke the part needed was $150. My DH would've been able to fix it with the part so if you don't know someone then you also have to consider labor on top of it. And if you can't diagnose the problem, paying for someone to come out!

We're going to sell our old washer and hopefully scrap the dryer and use the proceeds towards paying off the new set.

In the past we've bought a used set off friends and have been given hand me downs by family as well. Do you know anyone that recently bought a new set but kept the old one?

This happened to us a few weeks ago. I was super annoyed! We ended up replacing both the washer and dryer.

Do you have the manual for your washer? I would try looking up the issue first to see if you can resolve it. I've had issues with appliances, and a quick reference to the manual usually solves the problem.

I would definitely replace. You may be eligible for credits or cash if you go high efficiency? Depends on your state I think.

Today I came home after a long day of running around, went to start a load of laundry and my washer won't fill with water! It's getting power fine because it will agitate so something is definitely broken.

I definitely do not have money to fix this, but with a 2 month old baby I don't have much of a choice. I'm wondering if I should consider just buying a new washer. It's an old style top loader, used to work just fine, but it's 9 years old. Looks like I can get another top loader for about $400. I don't know what a repair might cost. What would you do?
