@PurpleUnicorn: ah, that is great that he doesn't cry much! We have tried the pick up/put down method too and I agree it seems to just wake them up more. We have the No Cry book and I like the ideas in it, I just haven't had a good chance to start implementing them. DH is a bit impatient about getting her sleep trained and the No Cry solution definitely takes time.

@MrsScallop: he doesn't cry much and if he is crying, it's really more of a whimper which i am okay with. if he starts to cry at a more elevated level, then i give the paci to calm him. I tried picking him up today too because someone else suggested the pick up/put down method but i feel like that wakes him up more than anything.

I also tried taking the paci away for a few minutes today for a nap to see if he would stop crying but i am not sure i did it at the right time as he might have been over tired and he just cried more so i gave it back.....i am still figuring out what to do and i figure the first step is just getting him used to falling asleep in his crib before i take away all his crutches!

ETA: i am thinking about getting the No Cry Sleep Solution book to see what it says about pacis etc, but will wait another week or so to see how things go. I've only been doing this for 2 days so far.

@PurpleUnicorn: thanks! I have been considering nap training to get her to go to sleep on her own, and this is definitely pushing me there. Does L cry most of the time you have him in his crib to go to sleep? I also am not a huge fan of CIO, but DH is trying to push it, so I love hearing other options!

@rrachael: It does help! If nothing else, it really is good to know others are having the same problem. I almost resorted to a walk with her in the carrier, but it is rainy today and I have a tiny apartment. She did finally pass out but only slept for 30 mins. Then after crying for about 10 minutes she finally gave in and nursed then passed out again. I am breaking all the rules and hanging on to her hoping she will get a good nap and be less crabby for a party we are going to this afternoon. Sigh...

@MrsScallop: W went through a phase around that time there the only thing that would calm him to sleep for a nap would be if I held him tightly in my arms (almost as if I were restraining him, cuz he would try to squirm and flail) and LOUDLY shhhhhh in his ear while I rocked in the glider, lol. Eventually he got over it though.

My LO is 6.5 months and we've been dealing with the same thing! On the worst days, the only thing that works is wearing her and walking around ... with a hat on or the hood on {if she's in the ergo} .. sometimes for a long time. Sometimes she's doesn't sleep the whole time but it does mellow her out a little bit so she's at least not as fussy.

Yesterday she only took two 30-45 minutes naps so Idid our bedtime routine a full hour earlier ... that kind of worked! She woke up a couple hours later but I think that was because of the heat if anything.

Hope this helps a little? :/

L started doing this a few days ago - refusing to nurse to sleep so i was at a loss. I've been wanting to work on him getting him to fall asleep on his own anyway so he just kind of forced me into starting now. What we do is just put him in his crib, make the room dark, put a blanket over him and stay with him till he falls asleep. He fights it at first, but so far its been anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes and he does fall asleep! the 60 minute episode only happened once, so overall not bad i think.

Specifically what we do when he is in the crib is stand over him, rub him, hold his arms down (this helps the most i think). And I give the paci, though it falls out once he is asleep. My goal is to work towards just putting him in crib and being able to leave him to fall asleep (without CIO of course) and even better without the paci - but that will take some time i am sure. For now i am glad it seems that the lack of nursing to sleep might mean people other than me can put him down.

ETA: oh and i went back to using the sleep sheep too. We stopped using it for a while because when he was nursing to sleep, he didn't need the white noise.

@Mrs. Chen: Thanks! It is good to know we aren't the only ones! She did eventually fall asleep with DH holding her, but that didn't last long :(

@Navy_Mommy: She is 6.5 months.

I was just going thru this!! I pulled out my bag of tricks and nothing worked...rocking, singing, nursing, taking her out for a stroll. She's been up for over four hours and I JUST got her down. She fell asleep in my arms and now I'm too afraid to move and wake her! Hang in there! She WILL eventually sleep!

LO has been Miss Crabby Pants all morning and I know it is because she is tired, but she will not let us help her sleep. Normally I nurse her or DH bounces her and she goes to sleep pretty quickly, but today she will latch on for a second or two then pull up and climb all over me, whine, rub her eyes, latch on again for a couple seconds, and start the whole process over. If DH tries bouncing her, she just cries and cries. If I just put her in her crib, she screams.

What do you do when LO fights naps? This is harder than night sleep!
