DD just turned 2 and is suddenly SUPER into pouches after barely touching them for months. I have no idea why, she just started asking (okay, demanding) them one day. She's not much into veggies aside from the orange ones (baked sweet potato spears, mashed butternut squash, and carrots) and, weirdly, spinach. But the spinach has to be cooked into something, preferably one of the Spinach Wheat Foldovers from Starbucks. I'm sure those aren't super healthy but I let her have one now and then just to get something green in her. Tonight, we had tuna casserole and she picked out every single pea from hers and just ate the pasta and tuna. I've basically given up, I still put a few veggies on her plate but pretty much write them off as destined for the compost. I figure she'll try them eventually and maybe even like them.

I've found that the more I stress about it and nah my daughter to eat, the less she eats. My doctor said that it matters more how much they eat in a week rather than a day. Or something like that. When they are hungry they will eat more!

I only ate cold oats with milk for 2 years, no joke. I also remember a year where I would only eat chili and cookies and cream ice cream. I was suuuuper picky until I started cooking now that eat and cook almost everything. I would not worry.

Thanks @namaste! I do some hiding with kale smoothies and I try to buy the pasta made with veggies and she doesn't mind marinara, so pasta night is usually her absolute favorite!

@Tanjowen: I feel you! We resort to that (or almond butter) a lot. It's like a necessary evil. Haha

My LO seems to get better then worse then better then worse again. At 19 months I really stick to the "it's my job to put healthy food in front of her. She can eat it or not" thing. I just absolutely refuse to get into a power struggle with her over food. I feel like it would only make things worse.

@fussygal: I shall commiserate! My 23 month old will only eat veggies in pouch form, and is a pouch addict. The only other way he gets veggies down him are when I cheat and smash them up with black beans or avocado and put it on tortilla chips. It works sometimes. I feel like the past week all he will willingly eat is peanut butter and toast, ugh :bummed:

Pouches are better than nothing! I've actually read that toddlers don't like veggies a lot of the time because they don't need them. I'll try to find the article it was really interesting. I was the worlds pickiest eater as a child and now I will eat anything so don't worry!

@Bubbles: It was so hard when we were going through that stage! It's easier to look back at it now and kick myself for stressing out about it. He still goes through phases where he will take 3 bites of dinner and be done. That just means he will eat more for breakfast. And now at this age we are able to institute the "no thank you" bite. He has to at least try a bite of whatever we are having. That was harder to do when he was younger.

It does get better! Just keep trying and keep giving a variety of foods. They might surprise you one day!

@fussygal: We used the flintstones multi vitamin with iron (he had low iron). We only gave him half of one. At first I would crush it a little then feed it to him on a spoon. Once he figured out how to chew it I would just give him the half.

I thought it was quite a normal developmental stage for them to refuse food at about 2?

My DD now 3, lived on eggs, cheese and bread for a good couple of months I'm sure, we just kept putting various veges on her plate along with stuff we knew she would eat.. I know it's hard but don't stress!!

Found where I read it:
Fussy eating – showing independence is part of normal toddler development and this often includes refusing to eat foods that you offer. Rejecting a food does not always mean the child doesn’t like it. If you offer it on another day, they may eat it!

@Bubbles: Sorry to hear it's getting worse for you, too. DD is a self-imposed vegetarian also :) She'll eat ground turkey if it's in tiny pieces in her pasta sauce, but that's about it.

@Foodnerd81: It's true that so much of it is luck! Which is very annoying when you try to do it all the right way and it still doesn't "work". :)

I am happy that she at least gets *something* through pouches. Although I have no idea how she can stomach those (the smell of all the veggies mixed together grosses me out!), but still won't eat a piece of broccoli!

My DD is 22 months and I have the same problem, but with fruit! My kid just won't eat fruit to save her life. It's a win when I can get her to just take a bite of banana or pear or apple. It's crazy.

But I do what you do and give her pouches. It's something at least. She does like some veggies, so I just give her those. My pediatrician said she's seen Kindergarten kids eat pouches and it's totally fine.

We started giving a multi vitamin for this reason. When he was 2 he was such a picky eater. But now at 3.5, he will eat all kinds of veggies. I was worried about it but our pediatrician told us to just keep offering, eventually he will eat it. In the meantime we gave him a multivitamin and made sure everything else he ate was healthy. And he had his fair share of veggie pouches at that age!

@Bubbles: my 2 year old will eat veggies but only eats meat if it's processed somehow- like chicken cutlets are ok, nuggets preferred, but definitely not just grilled. Sausage or meatballs are good, but regular meat is a no.

Oh and her favorite vegetable is the frozen broccoli with velveeta type cheese sauce. The more preservatives the better.

Unfortunately I think it's pretty normal. And if she's eating veggies in her pouches, that's something!

My LO is a pretty good eater- not every day, but overall she likes vegetables. Did I try and do the right things that "they" suggest? Yes. Do I think it was something I did right or mostly luck? Mostly luck.

Meanwhile her sleep sucks. I figure if I want to try and take credit for her decent eating habits then I need to take blame for her crappy sleeping, so I'm just going with bad luck for that one.

We're in a very similar place with our 23 month old. 😟 He doesn't eat meat either but at least eats a lot of fruit. I am trying to be patient and just keep trying, but it's getting worse rather than getting better. So no advice but plenty of commiseration!

Someone please commiserate with me!

At almost 21 months the ONLY way we can get DD to eat vegetables is with pouches. I've tried everything: steaming veggies, giving her frozen peas, veggie "sticks" and none of it works. She will occasionally eat avocado, cucumber and red bell peppers, but that's it. I'm feeling particularly guilty because a friend posted an (*ahem* slightly one-sided) article on FB (where most silly guilt comes from these days...) about eating habits forming early with kids, yadda yadda and went on and on about how great her kid eats. I did try to establish good habits and offered a wide variety when she was starting solids, but in the past six months she's quickly narrowed down her list of acceptable foods and I've basically given-up. I'm tired of trying new things only to have it go to waste. Beyond the veggie issue, she's just an incredibly picky eater in general. I know that isn't unusual for a toddler, but geeze it seems like it consumes my mental energy/guilt daily!

I mostly needed to vent, but any advice is welcome of course! :)
