My 17-month old has never slept through the night.
Last night I only got 45 minutes of sleep because she would only sleep on me sitting up in the glider!

So... umm... I feel your pain. And then some.

FWIW, my LO started sleeping much better when she became a belly sleeper. Went from waking up every 2 hours to waking every 3-4.

I am so sorry that you're dealing with this! We were in the exact same boat up until about 8 months and I know how exhausting it can be.

We turned a corner when LO was about 8 months old and finally, finally swaddle weaned. We did this very late because he could not seem to get comfy before that time (he was not rolling in his crib so we were not concerned about the late weaning). At 8 months, we swaddle weaned and LO turned over on his tummy and was so much comfier! He started waking only 2-3 times per night (down from 5-6!).

Hang in there, mama!

Ugh. Have you tried Dream Feeding? I was scared to do it, but it's the ONLY thing that got our twins to STTN. They weaned themselves off of it at about 8 months...
Hang in there! It is SO HARD to function without sleep :-( Hugs, Mama!

@scg00387: Ooh so maybe there is hope. And yep it's cold here but her room is always mid-70s...weird inconsistent thermostats, etc. Either way we have her in footed PJs and a swaddle around her chest. May try a sleep sack in a few days.

Aw I'm sorry. Hugs. I've been there and still dealing with a now 1 year old who still wakes throughout the night. Things got easier for me mentally when I just accepted I had a crappy sleeper and lowered my expectations. We ended up co-bedding because that was the only way I could get any sleep. Around 10-11 months, his sleep finally improved and by improved I mean only waking up a couple of times and going back to sleep easily. Hang in there. Sometimes all you can do is wait it out.

@Freckles: Between 7:30 and 8. I'm asleep by 9 so a dreamfeed has never made much sense (and when we tried them when she was younger, they never helped - I just ended up shooting myself in the foot staying up til 10 to do it and she slept exactly the same amount). And perhaps 8-2 is 6 hrs but sure does't feel like STTN to me ;) By the time she wakes me up at 2, she's already crying pretty hard, so we haven't gone 10-15 mins. Sometimes 5 and often by that point she's hysterical. We're doing an Isis sleep consult this week and may try to CIO/wait 15 mins this weekend and see how she does, but I am super nervous.

@looch: <3

@NovBaby1112: Yep we may try sleep training soon, I've been hesitant before now because she's always seemed genuinely hungry, not 'nursing for comfort'.. she tends to never nurse for comfort (ie if i stick the boob in her mouth and she's not hungry, she gets pissed.. also why dream feeds have never worked).

@heartonastring: Haha yes! Since we swaddle-weaned the movement is insane! I keep finding her scrunched up into the corners. Installed the breathable bumper too because TWICE Sat night (ie first night with no swaddle) she woke up with her arm hanging out the crib slat. That just won't do.

@MsLipGloss: Thanks dear. I'm trying to let go of the idea that I have any "control" over this. I'm all for sleep training but have come to realize that it just may not necessarily work for some babies. I was WILDLY optimistic that sleeping on her belly would be the magic fix, but obviously her hours have not budged a single minute. Maybe tonight.... night 3 on her belly.... I need to stop telling myself "maybe tonight" as the crushing disappointment and frustration at 2am is really getting old :)

@NovBaby1112: I did something similar, i.e., *re-framing* my expectations to expect to have repeated wakeups so that when there were only a couple/few wakeups, it made me feel like the night was (at least somewhat) successful, and that there was *hope.* Above all things with sleep training, holding fast to *hope* is vitally important!

@JoJoGirl: ((Hugs)) and ((Hugs)) and ((Hugs)) doll. Just keep reminding yourself that it gets better. It really really does. Sometimes it is just so hard (both physically and emotionally/mentally) to accept that some things just have to be *grown* out of . . . that there is no training or fix for the situation, only coping.

I am pretty sure we have chatted about this before, so I will spare you the gory details (again!). But caffeine and streamlining (paring down my daily obligations) were things that helped me the most. Mostly the streamlining . . . the caffeine was more like an *assist*.

FWIW, my LO showed some improvement (it didn't have magical properties, but it seemed to help) when she was able to sleep on her belly.

Have been wondering how things have be going for you.

We got two nights of STTN when we upped her bedtime bottle to 5 oz. but then the last two nights she's been up at 12 and 5:30 (but she goes back down until about 7:45/8:00). I know she's not hungry at 12, but she keeps turning herself 90 degrees, so that she's laying width-wise,and then getting upset that her head is scrunched up against the side of the crib. Hmph.

Glad to hear the swaddle weaning was no biggie. But sorry that you're still not getting much sleep. That sucks a lot :( I wish I had some magical advice I could give you.

even after sleep training my LO at 6.5 months, she still woke around 1/2am and 5/6am to nurse, then gradually she just woke once a night. it sucks, but it got so much better as she got older. i remember reading in a sleep training book- i think it was weisbluth's- that until 9 months old, some babies still need to nurse up to 2x a night, so that made me feel better.

some things that helped me get through it were realizing i wasn't alone, going to bed super early even if it meant less time with DH, and just trying to let go of the notion of STTN and expect frequent wake-ups, that way when she only woke up once or twice, my expectations were lower to begin with.

What time does she go to sleep?
If she's getting at least 6 hours of sleep, she's technically STTN. Her waking up 3-4 hours after the last wake-up is also pretty normal. 2 wake-ups were the norm in our house until about 8 months. I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but hang in there!

How long do you wait before you get her at 2am? Do you go to her right away or wait about 10-15 minutes. Have you tried dream feeds to delay the first wake-up?

My son didn't consistently sleep through until 8-9 months. It's sucky but normal. And he woke at 5:30 on he button even when he slept through until around 12 months. Good times!

My dd is 1 and still hasn't actually slept night to morning ever. Just letting you know you aren't alone..sleep training doesn't always work for every baby unfortunately :/

I'm so sorry :-( I feel your pain. DD didn't *actually* STTN until she was a year old. I think I'll die if this baby follows in her footsteps.
