It's when they turn the baby from the outside, manually. The doctor does it in the hospital with the ultrasound. The risks are low, but very serious—you can have a placental abruption and fetal distress.

@sorrycharlie: i agree that works. i have a friend who ALWAYS gives me unsolicited advice and criticism. even when we were chatting on video skype the other day she was criticizing how i was eating!! so i finally just asked her if she prefer i turn the video off so she can't make comments like that! it shut her up quick.

@knittingmama: and i am sorry you are getting that slack. i definitely agree with PPs that you are doing the best thing by making a decision with your doctor - that's all you need! out of curiosity, what is the "external version"

A good friend of mine was in your position, and she had an external version. A) It didn't work, she had a c-section anyway, and B) She said it was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. (The term she used was "agonizing"). Not that you need anything to bolster your decision, but I thought I'd share an example to counter the folks giving assvice. :-)

@MamaMoose: Awwww - yay! :D

@Ninja: I wish I could take credit, but I cannot. I first read the term *assvice* on a blog (Amalah.com - seriously funny blog about raising 3 boys and life in general), and it has definitely lodged itself permanently into my vocab. Enjoy! :)

 @MsLipGloss: LOL! I'm totally going to be using "assvice" in my vocabulary now :)

Everyone has different opinions when it comes to child birth and raising children, I wouldnt worry too much about someone elses opinion when it comes to YOUR birth, your friend probably meant well and thinks because he/she is a doctor they can push their ideas on you. The good thing about advice is you take it or leave it

Thanks everybody. Yeah, I definitely feel upset about it. I feel like we definitely thought about it carefully and it wasn't a decision that we made lightly.

I don't think my friend was trying to be rude, she was trying to offer what she felt was an educated decision as a doctor herself, but I felt like she ended up being fairly critical of what is kind of a sensitive topic. I don't feel so worried about a C-section and I feel bad that she kind of posited it as bad all over again.

Don't let abyone make you feel bad! It is your choice not to have the version done they hold their own dangers, I was scheduled to have one but went into labor before I had the chanve so I had to have a c-section as well and it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be :)

Ugh, I can't stand when people do that! I try to brush it off but I definitely admit to being hurt easily when people act as though they know what is best for me. I've found that the easiest way for me to deal with unwanted criticism is to call the person out on it - sometimes a blatant, "well, that was rude" suffices, and other times, just saying "well this is what I've decided, your criticism doesn't feel that great" or something along those lines.

I'm a huge fan of being blunt with people who are offensive, lol.

Screw asshats and their assvice! You are making the decision that you and your Doc have decided is best for you. End of Story! This makes me so angry for you - I'm so sorry it upset you. ((hugs))

FWIW, I would do the exact same thing.

We have a breech baby and are trying all of the other stuff (acupuncture, chiropractic, swimming etc) to turn it, but have elected not to do an external version, a decision my own doctor supports.

A friend of mine called me today, granted who is a medical doctor, but anyway, and gave me all the grief about choosing to schedule a tentative c-section instead of a version. Blargh, it really made me feel bad.
