@Danizaur: Yes, exactly!!! I have ALWAYS gone above and beyond my job and usually exceed expectations for my position and my work! But doing that and being EXPECTED to do that and being evaluated on that are two very different things in my opinion!

You should go above and beyond with your work! That's a given. I put my heart and soul into my job and I enjoy it and I enjoy being recognized for the hard work I do. But if my superiors started telling me I HAVE to go above and beyond and ask me how I'm going to do it and to write it down...I would be annoyed. It would make me want to exert myself a lot less. I work hard because I'm passionate about it, not because someone told me to.

That just seems annoying and large corporation-y. I work for a small business though so I don't know much about it.

I realize if all of our coworkers had the same kind of commitment and passion our productivity would skyrocket. But telling them to do MORE and write down how they plan to do more than their job description isn't going to get them to do it. Raising employee morale will.

@LemonLong: Yikes, that sucks. At my company, as long as you met expectations, you'll probably get the average raise. If you exceeded, you'll get higher, and if you didn't meet, you'll get lower! I don't think I'd like working for your company, haha.

At my company, if you just meet expectations then you won't get a raise or bonus. You have to be exceeding the expectations. It is pay for performance, there are no cost of living increases or anything. It's a major Fortune 500 company. I think these kinds of evaluations and performance measurement are pretty common.

All of our performance objectives are aimed at going "above and beyond" day to day work; I've never had "just doing your work" to be enough. It's the unspoken expectation, you KWIM?

Show how specific projects you work on (that may be part of your daily/normal work load) bring you above and beyond - how do those projects bridge departments? Show your leadership? Make your department a trusted resource within your company? Etc etc.

I don't know anyone who likes doing corporate evaluations, but this sounds pretty standard to me; sorry!!

@Smurfette: That sounds terrible too, haha. Although at least you're STILL rated on actually doing your job too. Our new performance reviews apparently aren't going to take into account how well we performed our jobs anymore...

We have to come up with 3-4 goals each year. These are in addition to our normal job duties. I have had to do it at every company I have worked for.
Our reviews are then based on normal job duties and if we met our goals.

I swear, my company changes how they do performance review every single year. We used to just write our own. Then they started assigning us these really generic ones like "Perform on your program" and "Be a role model" with really long, but generic descriptions. NOW they're saying doing your job shouldn't be an objective and that your objectives should be basically going above and beyond getting your work done. An example of this is you might have an objective to give a presentation to your section on some new capability you developed or some sort.

I HATE this. I'm busy enough just getting my work done (okay okay, I know I'm on HB all day, so I'm obviously not that busy, but you know what I mean). I don't understand why suddenly we all are expected to do "extra" work. And now we won't have objectives about getting our work done. So what if someone DOESN'T get their normal work done? There's no way to grade them on that anymore if it's not an objective (objectives you can meet, not meet, or exceed). And supposedly these extra objectives are JUST as important as getting our normal work done?? But how does that make any sense? Me giving a presentation to my section about something should NOT be as important as me getting my normal work done that's delivered to our customer!

Ugh, I'm so annoyed...
