@tlcbaby: seconding the idea of asking more questions! I was put under for postpartum stitch repair and was able to nurse immediately following! I hope your surgery goes well and is over quickly!

@tlcbaby: Have a really thorough conversation with the anesthesiologist when you are at the hospital. I had to have a D&C in July (retained placenta - so fun!) and was told ahead of time that I would need to pump and dump for 24-72 hours afterward, depending on the type of anesthesia used. I was REALLY dreading the procedure, not only because I hated using so much of my freezer stash, but also because I don't usually do well with anesthesia - I usually have a harder recovery from that than from the surgery!

At the hospital, I mentioned these concerns to the anesthesiologist and he offered to give me "walking" anesthesia, which is a a lower dose of the medication. You are technically awake during the procedure (I don't remember ANYTHING), which also means that this carries ferwer risks than the traditional route. The recovery is amazing as well. I felt 100% like myself and was up walking around as soon as I came out of it - NOT my usual anesthesia experince. Because it doesn't stay in your system, you can BF right away, so I never had to pump and dump. AMAZING.

Anyway, I am not sure this is an option for you, but I definitely recommend asking about it.

Good luck! I don't think I responded on your other thread but I'm so sorry to hear about your situation with the IUD. I'd continue to do your own research to see what you're comfortable with, but there are these kellymom articles about nursing and anesthesia if you haven't seen them:

@Kemma: I am still going to ask at my new mom's group tomorrow. There is a lactation specialist there and they have the book that lists all of the medications and whether they are safe during pregnancy/breastfeeding.

That does suck. Pumping is no fun. Pumping and dumping is no fun. Surgery is definitely no fun! Good luck! Hopefully this 24 hour period will be a distant memory soon.

Can you double check the meds and anesthesia as to their compatibility with nursing? I know that some c-sections are done under general and the mums are able to breastfeed straight away and sometimes the recommendations are blanket statements.

So I have to pump and dump for 24 hours after my surgery on Friday. :( I have a decent freezer stash, but I hate to use so much of it in one single day. I guess I might add some pumping sessions this week and next to build it back up.

I am assuming it is because of the general anesthesia, which I am also totally freaked out about. I've never been put under before and I am a little scared.

Just whining, I guess. I am just not looking forward to surgery and now I can't nurse my baby for a full 24 hours afterwards on top of that, which really makes me sad.
