@Emsmems: it's probably just a phase you have to wait out, but the Wonder Weeks says you can do a lot of practise of "leaving". Lots of peekaboo (behind towels, furniture, around the corner). Practise leaving the room and showing him that you always come back. That kind of thing.

@Emsmems: hmm. I'm guessing it's probably just 8 month regression then. We've never had a good sleeper so everything was damaging to his sleep - teething, milestones etc. Normally he'd go back to his normal (still not great) sleep within a few weeks.

My vote is separation anxiety and/or 8 month regression, or perhaps just getting over illness still. I would go in and comfort him when he cries. Babies need their mamas! I know it's exhausting, though. Hope you guys get some more sleep soon! :)

@sarah.clarisse: no, no room sharing since he was brand new. He does sit up right when he wakes up and only sometimes lays back down and goes back to sleep on his own. Otherwise he screams (maybe the "wait, where are you?!" Kind of thing?).

@Grace: you know, I forgot about that. That's a good point and very possible. Know of anything I can do to ease his distress and mine  ?

We went through a sleep regression around 8 months. It was tied to his learning to go from lying to sitting - which meant he could pull up and stand in the crib. At the time we still had his crib in the room and because he could see us at night he just wouldn't go back to sleep. Do you room share? If so this could be the problem.

Yuck! Could it be separation anxiety? That's around the time that babies get object permanance, so it could be that he's distressed that you are gone.

Hi, me again with another sleep post!

My son is 7.5 months. He got sick about 10 days ago (only for a couple days) and his sleep has sucked since! We didn't do anything out of the ordinary while he was sick (stuck to the routine, no bad habits), in fact, he slept MORE than normal, and slept through the night one night while sick. (He had a stomach bug and couldn't keep more than an ounce or two down at a time, it was awful).

Now, it's like we are in the 4 month regression all over again. He cries a lot when we put him down (he was just playing around until he fell asleep before this), wakes up multiple times a night (we were down to 2 or less), and his naps are 30 min again except for maybe one longer nap. What the heck is going on? Do we need to do CIO for MOTN wake ups? That is my only idea and I really don't want to!

Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated!

PS: before he got sick, he had a break through with a lot of new skills. He's going from laying to sitting and is pulling up to standing. He HAS learned to lay back down from those positions, I've watched him do it on the monitor after I put him down for a nap/bed or when he wakes up. Not sure if that makes a difference.
