Last night was a tiny bit better. DD woke up at 11:30. I was back in bed by 12 and I think I fell asleep by 1:30-ish. She was up again from 5:30-6 and I think I fell back to sleep by 6:30. So, slight improvement.

The issue isn't that my mind is racing - it's actually quite clear. It's not like any insomnia I've ever experienced before (like when I haven't been able to fall asleep because I've been stressed about work etc.). With this, I can fall asleep, but it's like the second I do, I become acutely aware of it and wake myself up.

I've been practicing yoga/meditation for 10+ years and while those techniques work to get me to sleep, nothing helps the fact that I keep waking myself up. So frustrating! Hopefully it will continue to improve. It's 100% psychological....totally psyching myself out about it.

I don't have night feedings yet, but I've always woken up a lot in the night. Breathing/relaxation exercises will usually help me fall back asleep. My go-to is breathing in for a count of four, then out for four, and trying to think only about the breathing and not everything else racing through my mind. Hope you get some relief!

I experienced the same thing and it was really exhausting. Since my DH falls asleep easily, he'd just tell me to wake him up and HD would rub my back or massage me and within minutes I'd be asleep again.

I always fed LO side lying in the middle of the night. It kept me really drowsy. When I really struggle to fall asleep I try progressive muscle relaxation. You realize how tense your whole body is when you do it.

Sometimes it helps me to listen to a podcast or something onto phone or iPod. It takes your mind off things.

The other thing, cheesy as it sounds, is an idea from a friend at work who is very into mindfulness. It is callled loving kindness meditation and you basically think good thoughts for other people in your life. It had worked for me in the same situation.

I switched from sitting up and nursing to side lying and that helped with going back to sleep. I doze during feeding then pop her back in the crib and go back to sleep. But we're still room sharing at 6 months because I'm too lazy to schlep up and down the hall.

i know everyone says NOT to go on your phone....and that is my problem sometimes too with falling asleep. However, when I lie in bed awake and am stressed about the fact that i am not sleeping or stressed about anything else, what works then is take my mind off it. in that case, sometimes going on HB and lurking the late night threads until my eyes get droopy does the trick.

I struggled with this too and I stopped checking the time. If it was 4am I couldn't go back to sleep because my brain was saying whats the point. (Ummmm 2 or 3 more hours sleep..... Thats the point!!) But if I think it's around 2 well.... plenty of time for more sleep. It still happens occasionally, hello 3:30 am the other morning but less and less and H is sleeping through a lot too now.

I never touch my phone in the MOTN and I feed/change DD in complete darkness and nurse with my eyes closed. Last night I was dosing while nursing her. I don't know what else to do!

I might try @SleepyMonkey's chalkboard technique tonight :)

Keep the lights as dim as possible, and don't look at the clock, that was a major stress for me!

i struggled with this issue too. i used to be a great sleeper and could fall asleep really easily. i find that if i keep my eyes closed while nursing and really try not to have them open too much, that helps. don't turn on any lights at all. but sometimes my brain just won't turn off and its "awake" while i try to go back to sleep, and thats what gets me. so i have a technique where i visualize erasing everything from my mind (like i'm erasing a chalkboard) and try to imagine i'm staring at a white wall...that works about 75% of the time. other than that, it sucks. sorry!!

Not playing with my phone helps! Also, if I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping I just start counting. That usually works, although sometimes I get to like, 500 and abandon that plan. Lol.

Sorry you're not sleeping, that's so hard :(

I had/ have this same issue. Not playing with my phone or iPad helps. Also putting clocks and other time devices out of sight also helps. Other than those suggestions I'm still struggling with this too!

I struggle with this too.

I used to play on my iPhone while feeding LO, but realized my brain was probably interpreting the light (although little of it) as a signal to wake up. I now keep my eyes closed the whole time she's eating and I think it helps.

I also try not to stress about "OMG IT'S 3am AND I HAVE TO WORK TOMORROW WHAT IF I CAN'T FALL BACK ASLEEP" once I'm back in bed. Just focus on deep breathing, relaxing each body part, one at a time, and trying not to think about it.

Sorry, mama.

Since sometime last week I've been having problems getting back to sleep after night feeds. I have always been a really good sleeper and needed a lot of sleep, so this is REALLY frustrating.

Over the last few nights DD has woken up once to eat. I'm up for about half an hour and I'm really drowsy the whole time. It feels like I should be able to fall back to sleep really easily after I put her down, but it's been taking 2-2.5 hours for me to fall asleep again. I've totally psyched myself out about it. So while I could be getting 8-ish hours of sleep, instead I'm getting a little over 5 and I feel absolutely terrible all day.

I start to fall asleep over and over again (probably 30+ times over a two hour time span), but then it's like I realize I'm falling asleep and then wake myself up. I have no problem falling asleep for naps or at the beginning of the night.

I am so tired and frustrated. Anyone else ever dealt with this? Any tips to overcome it?
