@Adira: thanks. At this point, my best guess is viral after the cold we'd be trading but I'm going to swap our detergent to free and clear and schedule an appt with his allergist.

@Applesandbananas: If he has hives because of some sort of illness, they can come and go. Plus if you gave him some medicine, that might help, and as it wears off, the hives could come back.

Poor kid!

I'm really confused, I've never dealt with hives before. LO was looking much better around 1am but now at 8, he's looking horrendous. I'm nervous to take him to daycare like that. Why do they clear up and then come back?? Does that mean he's being exposed again to whatever's causing this? We spent the better part of the day in bed yesterday because he was feeling pretty crummy but the hives were clearing up despite that. So I'm not sure why they've broken out like crazy now, after he's been in bed all night.

I found this:

Symptoms of hives include:
Raised circular weals appear that look like mosquito bites.
The weals are red on the outer rim and white in the centre.
Localised itching is usually present.
An individual weal has a lifespan of around two to four hours, rarely lasting 24 hours.
The weals appear in batches or clusters.
One batch fades away as a new batch appears.
In acute urticarial, the rash may last for days or weeks.

@Applesandbananas: You can definitely develop an allergy to detergent after years of using it without problems! I'm allergic to most mainstream detergents now. I use Ecos Free and Clear, but it works with my cloth diapers.

@Applesandbananas: Probably prednisone for you. I've had similar experiences with prednisone. I think prednisolone is more mild? Xander's never had trouble sleeping while on it, so hopefully your LO will be fine!

@Adira: that's good!! I've been prescribed steroids in the past (for severe poison ivy reactions) and it winds me up and I don't sleep and am just generally agitated for the duration, but I don't know the name of the steroid prescribed for that, or if the side effects will be the same for him.

I would call your pediatrician and ask. My kids have gotten hives before when they were sick and also seemingly out of blue. Usually the nurse I talk to can determine if I need to bring them in or not based on my description.

@Applesandbananas: DS1 broke out in hives like this after a round of antibiotics. (he had been on the same ones before with no issue). I took him in and he was on steroids and allergy meds to bring them down, but I took him off the steroids after a day or two because of its other side effects. The hives went away after a few days. I'd take him in

Ugh, he broke out again yesterday afternoon at daycare, likely around the same time as the day before. We gave him Zyrtec again (well, he gets Zyrtec every night anyway) and they didn't get better. This morning he was covered :( I got Benadryl on the way to work and gave him a dose but he seems miserable. I dropped him off at daycare and asked that they call if he seems not himself.

Would you take your kiddo to the pediatrician for hives??

We can't think of anything new he's been introduced to :( he takes Zyrtec for seasonal allergies, so I gave him his dose (he usually takes it at bedtime anyway) and that seems to have taken the edge off, he's not scratching at them. He took a bath and poured cool water on himself (he turned the cool water on lol so I hope that felt relieving to him).

I also gave him an ice pop and he's happy as can be.
