I've heard there are two main types... One hurts less when you eat and one hurts more when you eat. I haven't actually had one but I did have a bout if mild hypochondria LOL. Hope you feel better!

@mrbee: Seriously!

Oh and tips until you see a doctor...you could try an OTC med like Prilosec, Prevacid, Zantac, etc. It's not going to work right away like Tums, but if you're having ongoing heartburn-like pain it might help. Feel better soon!

I've had bleeding ulcers before - it took me years to figure out exactly what was going on. In college I kept having gnawing pains and got a barium x-ray, then a few years later the pain got a lot worse and an endoscopy confirmed the ulcers. In my case it wasn't h.pylori but the fact that the doctors at student health kept prescribing ibuprofen for my migraines and it finally ate away at my stomach lining. So I'm not allowed to have NSAIDs anymore. I went on Nexium for a while and it never came back!

Let me tell you why you SHOULD get this checked out - a few years ago my friend kept asking me if I thought her heartburn and pain might be more serious, and I kept telling her this story. One day she suddenly went into septic shock from meningitis and came very very close to dying. It turned out she did have ulcers, and they enabled the meningitis bacteria to cross over into her bloodstream very quickly.

I had one a couple of years ago and was put on some pretty intense medications. Made me sick as a dog, but it healed the ulcer. You need to get it checked out because it could get worse and bleed or perforate. Plus if it's one caused by H. pylori, you really should get that treated because it's very contagious.

@mrbee: dang. Ya I know that I just kind of wanted to avoid going to the doctor. Just got on my husbands insurance plan and hate the searching for a doctor hunt. I guess I'll just keep chewing tums :(

Ulcers are generally caused by a bacteria:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicobacter_pylori

They can be killed by antibiotics... no need to suffer!

Anyone on here ever had an ulcer? What did you do for relief? I'm not positive I have an ulcer but after having stomach pains for like 2-3 months that I've always though was heartburn I might be changing my mind. Anyways just wondering if anyone has any tips til I see a doctor.

Oh and antacids don't work :(
