I always just drink a glass of water plus a thermos full of water on my way to the doctor and that seems to be enough to fill my bladder for the sonographer to do what she needs to do!

I didn't need a full bladder for my first scan, but I did need one for my NT scan. I peed like normal, than just drank a regular sized cup of water about 15 minutes before the scan and was fine. Good luck!

I would recommend peeing when you get out of bed, if only to avoid a UTI.

I used to have frequent UTI's and my urologist advised peeing as soon as getting up to ensure that any bacteria in the bladder were flushed out.

@sslm: Wait, how far along are you? I totally peed *right* before (like 2 minutes before, in the waiting room) my ultrasound at 7+weeks.
The one at 20ish weeks they did make me drink the whole big amount--but they let me pee after they took the first 3 pictures they needed with a full bladder. I was so relieved I didn't have to sit there for half an hour with an overly full bladder!

make sure you aren't dehydrated before you start chugging your water 1 hr ahead. i tend to be dehydrated and noticed it took me longer to get my bladder full within an hr if i was dry to begin with.

I would pee first thing. Drink a cup of water before you go. That should fill you up okay. I had a full bladder unintentionally at my u/s and it was great because she let me get up and pee. When I came back, the baby had moved into a better position. :-)

I was only asked to bring a full bladder once, for my anatomy scan, and the radiographer who said it was such a cow that I nearly had nightmares of peeing all over the couch, she was so bloody rough with the scanner! It felt like she was trying to drill through to my spine! ( that was on the first attempt at an anatomy scan- I was 19 weeks along, and I think she was cross that she couldn't see enough detail cos of my belly fat and deflated bladder) So she made an appt for a re-do at 23 weeks, and thank god it was a different radiographer who was lovely and gentle. We live an hour away from the hosp and the appt was at 4.30 pm, so I obviously wasn't going to hold it in all day. I just drank a pint of water in the car on my way there. It was fine! If your appt is suitably early and you don't live far from the hosp, you'd be fine just holding it til you get there. And if they're looking for a sample just tell them you'll give it after the scan!

If I were you I would pee once you wake up and immediately start drinking the recommended amount of water after that. I know I would not be able to hold off peeing after waking up!

I think you should still drink, I know everyone is different but I also didn't pee before going in AND I drank about 36oz of water before going and it still wasn't full enough! I had to drink
2 more huge glasses and then I almost peed myself lol

I started drinking the suggested amount of water an hour before my appointment and boy, did I have a full bladder! I almost peed during the ultrasound! It was almost painful to hold in my pee because I had to go SO badly.

I'm going for a dating u/s on Friday (yay!). I have to have a full bladder, but what I'm wondering is, since it's first thing in the morning, can I just not pee when I get up? Or do I have to consume the 1-1.5 litres of water before going like they suggest?
