We used the Gerber training panties in the beginning. I like them because for accidents they absorb a little, but LO knows that she's had an accident. They aren't that absorbent that she wouldn't know she had an accident. To me they are like the next step. Then we moved on to regular/thin panties that were cuter/had designs. We actually don't have any character undies, they are just cute with designs--for my LO she just wanted to wear "big girl panties" like me.

They will still feel an accident in the thick ones and if they stop the flow, it helps. They will not come close to holding a full pee. We started with the thicker ones and transitioned to thin ones. He still chooses the thicker ones sometimes, so it's not like they were a waste. We didn't do any characters, I was more focused on soft and definitely did not want to get into the situation where I was battling him because the Spider-Man pair were dirty and he only wanted spiderman... He trained quickly and easily, so no regrets on not using characters.

Another vote for characters. We had the gerber ones, too, but they aren't as absorbent as you'd think they'd be!

We used diapers for going out when we first started training then moved to pull-ups.

Characters are more motivating :-) we had some training pants too, but they would only absorb maybe a dribble. My kid was all or nothing though, so not tremendously useful for us.

Regular cotton character undies. I'd just make sure you have more than one of each kind. DS was obsessed with the soccer ones for a while, which was fine, but then he got obsessed with this one pair of Wonderpets undies that came with them. And because there was one pair, he'd pee on it and then want to wear it anyway... it was just ridiculous how many times I had to say no to wet Wonderpets and make him cry.

Characters. When she stopped being motivated to use the potty I bought Dora and Disney princess underwear. That did the trick! I hate that they are so flimsy though.

@sorrycharlie: I don't think you need the thick ones, but we had some as hand me downs and LO still peed through them! I would skip them if I was going to spend money on them since they are useful for such a short time.

Thin and flimsy characters! We haven't had problems. When DS stopped having accidents, I actually started buying nicer underwear because the cheap ones, I could just toss if they were really bad.

We used the thin and flimsy character ones. They definitely don't hold anything in. She peed all over our couch but it really wasn't that big of a deal. She was sort of scared of panties after that for a couple weeks and I had to ease her back into them

Can you tell I'm obsessing?

Did you use the character undies when you started training? Or thicker ones (gerber training pants)?

The girls I babysat used characters and I remember them being really thin and flimsy! I feel like the training pants might hold more of an accident?
