I've only heard that this is an issue at the very very end, just like it *can* be an issue for nursing moms. Frankly, I'm too busty to not have underwire support and they haven't caused me any issues thus far (at 27 weeks)

I've never heard any bra recommendations during pregnancy other than wear what is comfortable. I've always been told those recommendations are based on purely anecdotal evidence anyway. I can't wear them now that I'm nursing because they actually do cause clogged ducts for me.

I think every woman is different. I actually find underwire bras the most comfy. It's actually recommend to wear underwire while you are nursing for fear of plugged ducts.

I wore underwire throughout my entire pregnancy and only stopped when I started breastfeeding. I have a 6 month old and we're still nursing! I just can't wait to wear underwire again after she weans. I miss my perky boobs and underwire is the only way I can achieve that!! :)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Hmm..... I suppose I'll stay on the safe side and buy non-wired ones when I require a bigger size.

@Jennimac: That's my problem!! Also one side is much heavier than the other - without the proper support I'm really lop sided!!!

@sea_bass: Hmm, I'm minded to believe it if it's come from your midwife. Perhaps I'll ask mine at my 16 week appointment. I'll be about ready for new bras then I guess.

Umm I can't live without my wires!!!!!

I wore an underwire bra all throughout pregnancy and all throughout my breastfeeding journey (wore nursing bras by Medela with an underwire). I never had any supply issues or duct issues.

Who knows!

I'm no help with accurate sources, but I wore underwires my whole pregnancy. However, since LO was born and I've been EBF, no underwires for me! I am terrified of clogged ducts!

@Cherrybee: I think it's also when you are further along. I was only 20 weeks whe our pregnancy stopped, but I was a DDD and I needed the support of underwire to keep them up.

@Cherrybee: my midwife advised me not to, if i was planning on BFing. I got some really nice underwire free ones from VS. I was told the wire can dig into developing milk ducts. I thought all my underwire bras fitted perfectly and it wasn't until I put on an underwire free one I realised they were digging. These are wayyyyy more comfy.

I've just stumbled across the notion that you shouldn't wear underwired bras in pregnancy for fear of blocking your developing milk duct system.

I've never heard this before (and am still wearing my underwired bras, of course). I Googled it but I can't find any reliable sources online, only message boards on which all the ladies are subscribing to this idea and are advising each other emphatically to steer clear of underwired bras.

Surely if this was true my midwife would have mentioned it to me? Surely if it was true there would be some reliable sources online - like the NHS website - urging me to ditch the wire??

It's an old wives tale, right? Tell me it's a myth - please!!!
