I lost my job at 3 months pg, so I understand how it feels to stay home before baby! I did have a 3 1/2 yr old at home though, so it wasn't so bad ;) My suggestion, enjoy it. If you can't find a job, don't stress. Enjoy having your "you" time while you can, get stuff done around the house you want to, etc, and just try to enjoy it.

I was in almost the exact same situation last year! Just graduated, pregnant, unemployed, wanted to be a SAHM not a SAHW and six months out from the due date. Just keep trying. I know everyone says that, but I barely had any nibbles for what seemed like forever and then all of a sudden lots of interviews. I managed to start a job in HR in August...HR is very understanding! I now stay at home :)

I'm gonna substitute teach (we're moving soon so I can't really get anything this moment). But it's not my field at all, so I'd still consider myself unemployed since I'd still be looking for work.

Would you be able to work part time instead? I am really sorry! I hope it all works out & wish I had more advice.

I understand. I FINALLY got a job offer on my optimal job, after 2 years of job hunting... at 13 weeks pregnant. I just went "I wish you'd called three months ago, because I would've taken the position in a heartbeat. But now, I'd be quitting in five months. Sorry." It SUCKS being unemployed when your work ethic is part of your personality.

@jedeve: I am sorry you didn't find my post helpful. Like I said, I understand why you would be stressed. I would be too. Have you looked in the area you will be moving to at all? I know it sounds silly, but I told DH that if one of us lst our jobs we would go work at a grocery store or Target just for the employee discount:) Mrs. jacks has a great idea about asking the campaign for something part time, that sounds like it would be really exciting.

@jedeve i can sort of relate. we were trying for a summer baby (i am a teacher) and as soon as we stopped trying we found out i was pregnant...and due the first week of school. how ironic. so, now i am not working since i am on summer break...and i can't get used to all the free time. i have no other children and to top it all off...my husband lives and works 80 miles away during the week and is home F/S/S only.

i always get mad at myself and don't want to throw a pity party, but the timing and has been tough and i am very career oriented. in the district i work in, you have to use all of your personal days for maternity leave, so not only am i having to take off during the worst time of the year for my profession, but i am having to drain the majority of my personal days as well to stay at home. i've tossed around the idea of staying at home, but i would have to move to a very, very small town (less than 2,000 people) and with one baby, knowing no one, and not working, i can't say i would fare any better.

so not the same situation, but in some ways i can relate. i have moments where i am fine, and other moments where i'm definitely depressed about the future and how things will turn out. we already pay for two sets of rents/bills/etc and picking up with child care will be like a 3rd house payment and financially things will be much more stressful after baby.

i'm just hoping and praying for the fact that everything will work itself out...because it just does.

@mrsmenow: Yeah, that is my point. Having little income is stressing me out. Maybe you missed the part where I lost my summer job? And I'm planning on substitute teaching in the fall? We're moving in a month - I can't really find a new job for just a few weeks. I'm house sitting and stuff, but yeah.

Also, I live in Montana. The place isn't really crawling with jobs. Trust me, my family loves to suggest things like "just get a job!" but that doesn't always work in every situation.

@jedeve: I know how you feel. It was so soul-crushing to get laid off and then not able to find even an interview, let alone a job. I got a job walking dogs and that really helped keep my weight gain down and kept me exercising every single day. And the extra income helped with our weekly expenses.

We were team green too!! Very good idea, and whenever anyone asks you what you need, just tell them gift cards and cash!!! :)

@mrs. wagon: Thanks! You are making me feel better. :-) This is a big reason we are going Team Green - we REALLY need practical stuff, and I hear you are more likely to get stuff off your registry that way.

We're having the first grand child on both sides, so that definitely helps! Plenty of aunts/uncles/grandparents waiting to spoil. I know it could be way, way worse. Its just more the embarrassment of staying at home before having a kid.

Honestly I couldn't do this, I am way to much of a planner and would feel so stressed with little income coming in that close to when the baby is due. I would find a part time job for the summer, even if was below my qualifications just to get us by.

@jedeve: it's totally possible!! ask around and see if you can find any parents who are done having kids... they are usually DYING to get all the baby stuff out of the house. We spend almost zero on toys and very little on clothes because of hand me downs. Plus, when you're a SAHM you can troll the sale racks at the baby stores every week during your outings with baby. I never bought anything over $5.

And register for reasonable things and you'll get tons of stuff at your shower! financially baby will slow things down, but life speeds up so it all evens out. :) good luck!!!

@mrs. wagon: I am jealous of unemployment checks!! I was working as a research assistant but that ended with graduation. I know people who have asked their boss to fire them (as opposed the boss "suggesting they quit/resign") so that they could get the checks. It's a crazy world.

On the bright side, my husband's (very modest government) salary is 3x my RA salary that we lived on last year! I think we'll be fine once he starts, we just won't be able to save much for a house like we had planned and pay off our student debt in a year like we had planned either. And baby pretty much won't get anything that isn't a hand-me-down/shower present!

I was unemployed, pregnant, and depressed as well!! I took it as an opportunity to try my hand at being a SAHM. (Well, I was in a slightly different situation-- I was laid off so I had unemployment checks coming in each week. When those ran out, I got part time jobs to do on nights and weekends, but that got really difficult because we got zero family time together.) Looking back, I'm really glad I had the opportunity to experience it, but I now know that I'm happiest as a working mom with family-friendly hours.

As for budgeting, it took a lot to be able to afford not working, including both of us having multiple jobs and very little family quality time. We cut a lot of things and built up some debt. That really sucked.

Note: this is NOT a criticism of women who stay at home! I want to be a SAHM, I just don't have kids yet, so keep that context in mind!!

I graduated with my MA in May, pregnant. We were trying, but we didn't think it would happen this quick. I wish we had started 3 months earlier or waited 6 months, because now I'm due in January (my husband has a 1 year position lined up, so it would have been ideal to have the baby at the beginning of this year or the next).

I started applying for jobs with the state before I was pregnant, but they take months to get back to you. I just got turned down for a job I applied for 3 months ago! So now that I'm 6 months out from my due date, I'm kinda screwed. I live in a right to work state, so you can get fired for no cause in the first 6 months (ie - being pregnant). Also, if I worked for the state (assuming I start now and get 6 months in), I'd only get 6 weeks maternity leave, and it's important to us that I stay at home for 3 months with the little one.

So looking for a full time job in my field, I'm kinda screwed. I applied for a job on a campaign, but it sounds really intense 7 days a week, no time off - I don't know if I can handle it preggers. I'm thinking I will just substitute teach next year and then take the time off to stay with the bebe and then look for a job when we move again.

I feel anxious/stressed/depressed though. Staying at home before kids hasn't seemed like a viable career choice since the 60s! We're really broke right now, just a few thousand left in student loans till my husband's job starts in August (he's studying for the bar now). I lost my nannying job I had lined up for the summer (professors who decided they wanted more family time...grr).

Anyone else in a similar situation? What do you suggest?
