@MamaG: I can't remember if it was $940 or $970, but it was definitely just under a $1,000. That was for the front doors and a square window in the master bathroom. This re-do will cost a third of the original install.

@SweetiePie: yes, the price was the same no matter the design for either window because I wasn't getting custom colors. He had at least 40-50 designs and then variations from those and you could even make one completely custom.

@gotkimchi: after spending so much time on here talking about it I think that is the best approach to take. You all have been helpful. I really want the extra diamonds and would love not to pay more than an ATM withdrawal to get it. ** see I am justifying the cost already **

How does the additional fee compare to the original cost? That would probably influence how I handled it. Regardless, I think the windows look great.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: were the two designs the same cost at the beginning? I would think the busier design would have been more, maybe that's where some of the extra cost is coming from?

I think that expecting him to do it for $0 more is unreasonable (it's still his time and materials and it's not because he did it wrong), BUT agree with @gotkimchi: that asking for a discount isn't unreasonable. It's sort of "repeat" business and he also got additional business (neighbor) because of you. I would try to explain that while you're dissatisfied it's not his fault, and see if you can meet somewhere in the middle.

Could you just explain to him what happened and ask for a discount? Say you know it's not his fault and you really want to be 100% satisfied, is there anything he can do in the price?

@erinbaderin: no, I have been trying to let the design grow on me since install. It has always looked unfinished. Then, I saw the neighbor's and saw that the extra diamonds in fact look nice, then it was Christmas and every time I pull up to my door the "missing" diamonds are glaring.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think it would have been your responsibility to ensure he was installing the right one (especially with the previous uncertainty). The situation sucks, but I don't see it as being his fault. A simple "Sure, you can come over, but I need to verify the choice first." would have helped.

@littlejoy: we were in an email exchange regarding the renderings. My last email was that I approved the bathroom mock up, and was still thinking about the front door and he may need to come out to go over options again. A couple weeks went by and he called because he was in the neighborhood doing installs for others and asked to install mine as well. When he showed up moments later I asked him, which option was he installing. Surprise! Lol

I'm confused by this: "I didn't give the final okay, but I let him install it." ... I guess as a service provider, if someone chose an option, and let me install it, I wouldn't feel responsible if the customer simply changed their mind.

For what it's worth, I think the design is nice ... if the only difference is another diamond or two, it wouldn't be worth it to me (to pay for), and I don't think I'd ask a business owner to eat the cost on something I authorized.

@Mrsbells: in that case if I insisted back then I would have been hit with a redesign fee too. The quality is not the issue. The product performs as intended. Honestly, if he had not tried to talk me out of it and just told me "ok, you don't like it, it cost $330" back then I would have said ok. I am doing more projects around the house now and am using a budget for each room. So getting a $330 bill now feels like a line item. It's weird when I am watching what I spend I don't want to spend it.

ETA: I am 98% sure I would have said ok back then and figured out a way not to let DH know I spent more money on the doors!

@Mamaof2: I wish it were that easy. He has to refabricate the entire window pane pieces. There are 12 panes total, and this affects 8.

@Freckles: @kiddosc: @Mamaof2: Letting him install was definitely a go ahead by me. However, he literally called a hour or two to see if I was home because he had everything. I should have spoken up and said I was still mulling over which design to choose. Where I left off in our design approval email trail was that I wanted to look at more options.

@Freckles: He didn't say. He used another client as an example of redoing the work until it was perfect. Apparently, she did not like the ways the colors looked- bronze/ java- and they had to redo her window until they found the perfect brown.

I feel like he learned his lesson on the window design at my expense and gave my neighbor a proven, winning design.

Ugh, that sucks. Did the satisfaction guarantee include changing the design at no cost? I would ask why he charging the $330 if he had stated that there was a satisfaction guarantee being provided to customers. Perhaps there was miscommunication/misunderstanding on what that included.

I don't know if the absence of the final go ahead in an email really matters in this case since you verbally told him to proceed when he was at the house.

You may recall the post several months ago about my front doors and an acrylic product that provides privacy. So, the vendor gave me a busy and less busy option. I indicated I liked the less busy option, but never gave the final go ahead (I have an email trail). One day he was in the neighborhood and installed the products. I didn't give the final okay, but I let him install it. I liked it alot as it was a big improvement over what I had. A few weeks later, I had second thoughts. I called him and told him as such. He said he would redo it, but in his professional opinion I would just call him back and ask him to switch it back. I agreed to live with it. Another neighbor moved in and picked my design (she said to him give me that house's), but he installed the more busy option. It looks great. Her door is a little different where it's a single door with two small vertical windows on either side. I have a double door. Now, with the holidays and my wreath on the doors my dissatisfaction has grown. The wreath covers up the main design and without the extra design on the bottom and top window panes the window is just not working for me. I reached out to the vendor again and now he's telling me to change it will cost $330. He has a satisfaction guarantee, which he touted during the sales visit, but did not say there was a "return"/ "redesign" fee. How would you proceed?
