This is a pretty comprehensive list: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/6e5dga/a_list_of_things_to_do_when_a_loved_one_dies/

I would also highly recommend helping her find a local widow support group. My coworker had her DH pass after a battle with brain cancer and she credits her local FB widows group for helping her cope and find the resources she needed for her and her young kids during that transition period.

My mom makes a lot of photo books. Took to keep the memory of her husband alive, it might help to make some photo books with notes about what he was like, what his hobbies were, small things that you don't think to document. That way they can pick up the book and read it at any time without having to come up with things to talk about. And the kids can keep the books the rest of their life.

My friend lost her husband around this time of year and the first thing she did was file for a tax extension. She knew she wouldn't be able to get to it by the deadline.

My husband was older than that when his mother died, but he talks a lot about how hard it was because his dad never talked about her. I know it must have been very painful for his father, but my husband felt like talking about her more would have helped him a ton.

I lost my father when I was younger and I can think of two things to suggest:
-get counseling for everyone, herself, kids and keep going as the kids grow
-keep pictures/memories around and alive, watch videos and talk about him often

First of all, I’m so sorry about this situation. It’s awful and it’s so not fair. I lost my mom at age 7. I don’t remember a lot, but the thing I remember most as being helpful right away is group therapy with other kids who had recently lost parents. One thing I wish had happened was I wish my dad had kept more pictures around. I was totally dependent on my dad for maintaining my memory of her, and after she died all the photos went in boxes. I understand that photos were probably hard for him, but it would have been so great if he had just put a photo of her in my room if it was too much to have them around the house.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I lost my husband unexpectedly just over a year ago. At the time my children were 4, 3, and 3 months. A couple of things to handle at first is to file for survivor benefits with social security for the children. There’s a one time small payment for the spouse but children will receive a monthly benefit. She should also find out if her spouse had life insurance or mortgage insurance that pays if a spouse passes away. Those are the first things I would handle. Eventually she’ll need to remove her husbands name from accounts, close any credit cards or accounts that were in his name alone. If she doesn’t have a will it would be the time to set something up. Especially regarding care of the children if something should happen to her.

Hi all. I have a friend who has recently unexpectedly lost her husband. She has two kids aged 6 and 2. She has asked for some advice on what she needs to be doing next?

The funeral has come and gone, it's the life stuff, the setting things up for living without him that is overwhelming. What are things she needs to make sure she has in place? People and institutions she should call that she maybe hasn't yet? She wants to make sure she doesn't miss anything important but understandably she is having trouble focusing.

Also, advice from anyone who has lost a parent at a young age would be appreciated.
