@wheres_c: thanks for asking :-) not really. All my results came back normal & no one has indicated doing more tests. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with acid reflux maybe GRED. I've been taking otc pills for it for the last week or so and have felt a lot better! I can tell the difference when I don't take them. I just haven't had the time to be able to follow up on it. I have a friday opening up later this month so ill probably have it looked at then. Hopefully that's all that it is.

So I had to cancel my stress test. The ER nurse told me there was no prep & to go about my morning as I normally would. YAY, no fasting...until I get there and they tell me they can't do it because I didn't fast. WTH! I took a full day off yesterday for the ER visit, 1/2 a day today for a test I can't even do, and now I have to take another 1/2 day to actually do the test. I had already planned to take off for 3 hours on Friday for my annual.

I feel like a horrible employee! I already take so much time off for DH & now I'm taking off a bunch of time for appointments for myself. This BS is causing me more unnecessary stress then the stupid test would.

@Lindsay05: I get it. I always take HB medical advice with a grain of salt. Maybe I should clarify. What made sense was "The nitro pill helped because it is a vasodilator which relaxes those vessels and helps lower the blood pressure" medically speaking that makes sense.

@Sugar.Biscuit: I should tell you that you do not necessarily have blockages or restrictions but it's always a possibility and that the pains could definitely related to something other than that. I wish nothing but the best.

I don't have much advice, but just wanted to say that I hope you feel better! And I second PPs-advocate for yourself! I had my gallbladder out too, and I know that there can be symptoms that mimic an attack if the surgery wasn't done/healed correctly. I really hope that you find some relief soon!

High blood pressure is can lead to angina (chest pain) like symptoms. When you have high blood pressure, it means that you have either a restriction in your blood flow, or a vessel blocked. The nitro pill helped because it is a vasodilator which relaxes those vessels and helps lower the blood pressure.

Stress, obesity, anxiety, etc can all increase blood pressure. The beta blocker they give will lower your heart rate, therefore making your heart have to work less. It's great they are doing some tests and hopefully can discover what is going on. I agree with others and that chest pain is always a serious issue and should be looked at until a reason and solution can be found.

I get this - from anxiety. It took me a long time to figure out what my triggers were, and now I can feel it coming on, even if overall I feel good and not stressed.

Have you seen an actual cardiologist? ER doctors are great, but this sounds like it may be a more specialized problem that you should see a specialist for. With your family history, i wouldnt just drop it.

@Sugar.Biscuit: If your body is telling you something is wrong---listen!!! Advocate for yourself.

I had terrible chest pains last year. They came out of nowhere, were terrible, made it hurt when I breathed (which made me take shallow breaths, which made me panic because I couldn't breathe). This is somewhat of an embarassing story...

I honestly thought I was dying, and I'm not exaggerating. I was on a road trip with my now-husband, and I made him pull over at a gas station, then it got MUCH worse, I thought I was having a heart attack, and he called 911. An AMBULANCE came to get me. I remember holding his hand thinking, "well, this is it". I didn't even care that everyone in the gas station was staring.

I was rushed to a tiny, rural hospital in the middle of nowhere. They did an EKG--results were fine. They did a CT scan of my lungs to see if I had a collapsed lung or a blot clot in the lungs--it was fine. They gave me morphine and it made me nauseous but my chest still hurt. They kept me overnight, and then sent me home. He mentioned it might be a panic attack, but I was ASLEEP IN THE CAR when the pain woke me up, so I knew that wasn't it.

We stopped our trip and went home---I went to my doctor the next day, who basically did nothing. The pain continued---right between my breasts, where my bra hits my chest. I couldn't go to work. I was in misery all day long. I couldn't eat, couldn't drink--the pain was constant, and not come-and-go.

Two nights later, I went to the ER in my city in the middle of the night (it had just been getting worse and worse the past two days). I KNEW *something* was wrong, and I told them I wasn't leaving until I knew what. They did it all again---EKG, CT scan....

heart was fine, lungs were fine....but this time they did the CT scan of my entire upper body. And the doctor came in and told me that a CT scan wasn't the right instrument to know what was going on, but that my entire stomach (the outside of the whole organ) was inflamed. He said it might be a bacterial infection, a stomach ulcer, or something else in my stomach.

I really started freaking out at this point, because my family has Lynch syndrome (a genetic abnormality which means you have a VERY high chance of getting certain types of cancers). My GP referred me to a gastroenterologist, who told me I would have to wait 6 weeks for an appointment. I cried and begged on the phone, and they fit me in for the next week.

I had a lovely upper GI and a colonoscopy and found that I had an esophageal stricture--basically, my entire esophagus was so inflamed it was swollen almost shut. And these types of attacks can mimic heart attacks. http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/health-support/esophageal-spasms-feel-like-heart-attack

The doctor fixed the stricture (he used a balloon to re-open my esophagus), I started medication for GERD, and I went on a very bland diet for 4 months.

My very long story is to tell you....it took me 2 ER visits in two different cities, several doctor visits, 1 GI visit, a endoscopy and a colonoscopy, and something like $8,000 out of pocket (that's with my insurance!) to find out what my pain was from.

But it was SO worth it to have the pain go away. My GP tried to just send me home telling me it was a panic attack. I knew the level of pain I was experiencing was not in my head....so I didn't give up, and I kept going until I found someone who could figure it out.

You should do the same!

I had that problem once, went to the ER and found nothing. A doctor told me then that things like that can happen and usually go away within 6 weeks. But it seems like it is more of a problem since it is recurring for you. I'd suggest getting checked out for MTHFR and/or seeing a naturopath. MTHFR is a blood clotting disorder and can cause heart disease. It is also genetic. A naturopath would look into the root causes of your issues, instead of treating the symptoms (like beta blockers). Good luck I hope you feel better soon!

I have been suffering with random chest pains for about a year. All EKGs have been normal but my aunt and grandmother died suddenly from heart related issues so I am so scared.

I also suffer from (undiagnosed) anxiety, sleep apnea and have shoulder pain from a car accident. Every time I have chest pains it is chalked up to one of those reasons but I am scared to death that its so etching with my heart, which of course increases my anxiety.

In short, I could have written your post so I can sympathize. I have an appt with a mental health professional to try and get my anxiety under control, an appt with a physical therapist for my shoulder pain, and a new sleep study for my apnea.
Once I get those issues under control, I will re-evaluate the chest pains.

I sympathize with you but don't have anything constructive to say except you are not alone, and if you are feeling anxious, perhaps try to treat that and go from there.

Ugh that sounds so frustrating-- and scary. I hear you on the IBS-- I was diagnosed with it after they pretty much said, Oh, it could be endometriosis, oh, it could be this, or that, and finally, it's IBS... have more fiber and good luck! Meh.

As for the chest pains, I had that once, and it would get worse if I got worked up (which, of course, I did, because I was having chest pains!). I ended up having to go to the ER because they were concerned it could be a blood clot, which could be really serious, but blood tests and xray came back and said nothing, so they said it was just muscle pain/strain. I've had it once since then, but not as bad, and didn't go to the doctor or anything. But since your blood pressure was high, I doubt that's all that's going on with you.

Hope they figure it all out!

For the last 3-4 years I have random chest pain about 2-3x's a year, I go to the ER, they do an EKG, & its normal. No heart attack & they call it pain from anxiety (even though I'm not anxious at the time). Good news, Right?

In December I had my gallbladder taken out, it can cause heart attack like symptoms (who knew!?). In March I start having pains again & chop it up to be left over gallbladder pains. When I asked my Dr. he said it was impossible because I don't have a Gallbladder anymore (even though my surgeon said it could happen) that it was muscle pain. Today I have the same pains AGAIN while driving into work on a beautiful, sunny, stress free day. I go to the ER again! My blood pressure is high 165/98 (not normally this high, even when I was in extreme pain during my gallbladder complications the highest it got was 135/85) they gave me a Nitro pill & my pain went away. My EKG=normal, ultra sound=normal, xray=normal, lab work=normal. What does all that = ? A stress test tomorrow. Nurse said there was talk about putting me on a beta blocker but they are waiting till after my stress test tomorrow.

:-( I was suppose to meet with my personal trainer today to start working out so I can get healthy. I'm glad they haven't found anything too concerning & I am relieved I finally got someone to listen to me but I'm nervous about the chest pains. My dad died when he was in his early 60's, grandma had a hole in her heart, had high blood pressure, diabetes & died at 72 from a stroke, grandpa had an irregular heart beat & had a pacemaker put in (he lived forever though like 95). I may have a fear of dying...lol.

So needless to say here we go again with all the test. I feel like a hypochondriac sometime. My concerns get put on the back burner & it has to get serious before they even attempt to do much of anything. I just hate how the medical system around here drags things out. It took 3 years to diagnose my IBS! 3 years.

Wow. I feel So much better now that I have that off my chest lol no pun intended. I just pray that I get an answer as to why I'm having random chest pains. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it just be high blood pressure?
