DS experiences these random fever spikes once in a while. We attribute it to growth spurts. His fever would range from 101 to 103. We alternate between Tylenol and Motrin. Tylenol seems to be more effective than Motrin per the suggested dosage. We called the pedi to ask for his opinion since it didn't come down past 101 and he recommended a larger dosage of Motrin given DS's weight. That seemed to help. After 3 days, his fever finally broke.

It was also weird because his fever seemed to only appear in the evenings. Nothing during the day. No other symptoms either.

My kids have high fevers and I typically only take them in on day 4 unless there are other worrying symptoms. Tylenol doesn't work on its own for us at all, so we use ibuprofen and sometimes for the first day or so we have to alternate every 4 hours with Tylenol to keep the fever down. Unless they are lethargic or inconsolable, I wouldn't worry!

My son just went through this last week with a little lower fever. No other symptoms other than poor sleep and eating a little less. No cold no rash nothing else. Started Monday night and by Friday he was back to himself. It might have been 2 year molars but I haven't got a good enough look yet.

Fwiw Advil does a better job of reducing my sons fevers than Tylenol. Hope she's better soon!

DD2 is 3.5 months old and just had 3 days of unexplained fever. Doctors ran tests but everything was normal and they chalked it up to a virus and it should go away soon (and it did).

Thank you for sharing your stories and advice, everyone! I think we're going to visit DD's ped, tomorrow. She's still hovering around a temperature of 102, and this is her fourth day of fever. Otherwise she's eating, drinking, sleeping, and playing, like normal. I wanna say it's this infamous "fever virus" you guys mentioned, but I suppose I'll be on the safe side and get her reevaluated. Hoping for a healthy birthday girl!

@lovehoneybee: I was actually curious if the UC doctor might have missed an infection in one or both ears. While he seemed rather thorough, it did cross my mind! I'm glad they caught your son's infections; that must have been scary. Thanks for the well wishes! :)

E was spiking scary high fevers a few days in a row. His daycare teachers told me he seemed a little bit off-balanced, so we thought it was an ear infection. But when I took him to the pedi they (an intern and a pedi) couldn't find anything (and when we were there he didn't even have a fever because Tylenol--when we got home it had spiked again).

The next night it spiked really scary high (105.9) and he was super lethargic, so I took him to the ER, where his ears were checked by the nurse in triage, a pediatric nurse and a pediatric resident. None of them could find anything that was causing his fever. They said they would need to do a urinalysis to find out if there was a problem with his kidneys, when the chief pediatric resident came in (they didn't want to put us through inserting a catheter without a really good reason). It took 3 of us holding him down for 10 minutes before she found evidence of a double ear infection. So 5 professionals looking for an infection couldn't find it. Not saying it was missed at UC, but maybe is still a possibility. E showed no other signs of it (didn't seem to be in pain, wasn't touching his ears or anything, just a little unbalance one morning).

Also, turns out his top two year molars were pushing through (the combination is likely why his temp was so high).

I hope you get some answers soon--I think the not knowing is the hardest part! And I hope your little lady gets better ASAP!!!

My lo has had I think 3-4 days of fever before it started to go down from what the dr thought was a virus. While we had other symptoms, it could be that your lo hasn't shown all the symptoms yet. Like @silva said it could turn into cold symptoms later. Sorry about the crappy timing. :( Hope your lo is better quick!

My daughter had this two weeks before her first birthday. At first we thought it was teething, but then it went on for too long. She had a fever, hovering around 103 for 4 days. When it broke, her torso was then covered in a rash. It turned out to be roseola. Our doctor said it is very common once the fever breaks for the rash to appear. The good news is, once they get it they can't get it again. And she was not bothered by the rash. Hope your LO feels better soon

Our daughter's illnesses tend to play out with about 3 days of just a fever, and then cold symptoms develop on the 4th day. Our doctor's office likes to see her after 3 days of fever, they check for ear infection, etc. If the fever continues for 5 days, they will do a catheter to check for UTI. If there are still no symptoms after that, and the fever continues, I'd explore further testing.

I have no kiddos myself yet, but two of my coworkers had something like this with their school-age kids in our city this past year. The ped called it a "fever virus" and said it was going around. They really had no other symptoms, and eventually it went away. Thinking of you!

Our ped likes to wait until day 4 to be seen with a fever - so I wouldn't worry yet.

DD had a fever and we took her in on Day 4 - ped said it must be a virus and to bring her back the next day if she still had a fever - so I did. I was getting worried - day 5 of a fever - ped said on day 6 she would be admitted to the hospital. A few hours later the fever broke and HFM reared its ugly head!

Hope its clears up for your LO!

With roseola, the rash usually appears after the fever resolves, so that could still be the case. Usually a fever that lasts 5 days or more would be cause for blood work/further testing...

My daughter will be one this week (great timing!), and has been battling a moderate-high fever for the past three days. When dosed with Tylenol, we're able to bring it down for a while, but have been unable to break 100.3. Once the medicine wears off, her temp quickly spikes, again. Her fever reached 103, yesterday, so we took her in to Urgent Care. She tested negative for strep and a UTI, and the doctor saw no sign of an ear infection. She does not have a rash/bumps, so HFM and roseola don't seem to be the cause, at this point.

While she's been a little lethargic and uninterested in eating and drinking her usual amount, she seems to be in fair spirits, and is still sleeping well. She hasn't been coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or displaying other common cold/flu symptoms.

If she's still fighting a fever tomorrow, her ped would like her to come in for second examination. He might do some blood work, as well. I'm admittedly a little puzzled and am starting to worry, a tad.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did you opt for further testing, or just ride it out? Ever determine the cause of fever?

Thanks!
