As a stylist, and salon owner myself, i am glad to have read you are going back to have it re done! There is nothing to be ashamed of, it simply doesnt look anything like you wanted and this happens often. From what i can see, the "gloss" was probably a toner she used to tone down the blonde it was prior to rinsing...which wasnt quite the correct color to use. The "highlights" shouldnt start that high up. Just be as clear as to what your looking for and im sure it will be just fine! Also, it is possible to get that color in one sitting :) Good Luck!

@extrasprinkles: Fingers crossed. Glad to hear you're getting it fixed. Try not to think of it as awkward - you for paid for their service, you have the right to complain.

Thanks all -- I feel way more empowered to go back to try and get my hair "fixed". Embrace the awkward! I'm just waiting to hear back as to who I would see (same stylist or not) and will see how things unfold from there.

Fingers crossed -- thanks again! And thank your lucky stars if you have a go-to stylist that you love! :)

@Mrs. Pen: oh, it's certainly possible, over time. But to go from the OP's level of darkness to the lightness in the first pic in one visit is what I'm saying would be pretty much impossible.

@Truth Bombs: I don't think it's impossible to get lighter coloring? It may take longer to process.
I've been doing balayage to my hair for years now. I have dark brown hair and she gives me a glorious caramel ends.

I see the stripiness you mentioned. I'd definitely call and say your color didn't come out as envisioned and see if they'll offer to fix it.

This is mine:

She should have never shown you the first pic. With hair as dark as yours it's impossible to get that light in one coloring. I would go back and ask them to blend it better. You paid for a service that you aren't satisfied with, don't feeling guilty getting what you paid for!

I'd go back and ask for someone else to do the color this time (their best person, preferably). Color-aside (since she added the gloss, that might be the reason it's more auburn and not as light as the example), she definitely started the color too high up and didn't focus as much on the ends as balyage normally does.

Worst case, I'd make the new person do something all over to just make it back to your natural.

I def see what you're talking about. I'd go back and give them another chance first! I understand bayalage and dark hair is difficult, but to me what you were shown and what you have are just completely different... I feel like she wasn't even doing bayalage (just chunky highlights??). I'd maybe go in armed with a ton more pictures and have a lengthy discussion with her and maybe someone else (her manager?) first.

Ugh I so want to do this after #2 too, but this is why I'm so scared to! I also have super dark hair...

I definitely see the stripiness you're talking about. I don't think it's a big deal to go back. They're motivated to fix it for you so that you'll return as a customer. I had highlights once that turned out very stripey and she missed huge chunks of my hair. I returned to the salon and another stylist corrected it for me. It was sort of awkward, but getting your hair color is expensive and you should be happy with it.

I've been going to the same stylist for over 10 years, and once my hair came out in a way I realized I was unhappy with after I got home. She redid it no charge, and it was no big deal. This happens in their profession. I would definitely go back and have her redo it for you.

I've gone back to a salon to have a cut fixed but not a color - that said, coloring is expensive and if they offered to correct it, I'd definitely take them up on it. I'd be super apologetic at the follow-up appointment and say that you should have looked at it closer before you left, and that you're so thankful they could fit you back in, impressed at their customer service, etc. Then give a decent tip afterwards as well.

(Also, I don't think your after looks like picture they showed you - it looks like chunkier highlights to me and less like blended balayage. The tricky part is that I'm not really sure how they'll fix that without lightening the rest of your hair? But I'm not a hair stylist, so hopefully they have some tricks up their sleeve!)

I had something similar done and have similar hair. It's taken 6 times and it's still not quite right. Lightening my color type of hair is not easy. My gal did a freebie the second time (I still tipped) to make it so it was not so orange.

I went to a salon for cut/color this past weekend and had mixed results. I'm fine with the color but the balayage looks rough (in my eyes). I asked my stylist for something subtle/lived-in looking/natural. Just something to add dimension to my naturally flat black/brown hair color. She showed me a balayage that she had done on another client and it looked great. Our natural hair colors are clearly different but I was on board for the overall look.

Towards the end of the hair coloring process, we tested a few sections and the color was looking kind of light. She applied something to my hair (a gloss?) to deepen the color, which I appreciated. But when all was said and done, I was kind of ... confused? Not horrified, but just not feeling it. In my rush to make a train + get home to LO, I didn't sit and look at my hair from every angle. But when I got home and had my husband take some pictures of my hair, I was really unhappy. My hair looked kind of ... stripey. And orange? And not really like the picture that my stylist showed me.

The salon sends out an email survey after visits, so I tried to respond as fairly as possible. While I'm really pleased with my haircut, I clearly should've looked closed at my hair while at the salon and should've said something. The salon has offered to re-color my hair for free, which is great. (Cut + color = not cheap!) But I'm not sure if I want to return to the same salon, especially if it's the same stylist. Not only would I feel super awkward, but I'm not convinced/confident that the second round results would be great.

Has anyone ever returned to a salon/stylist to fix their hair color? Does my hair actually look similar to the picture and I'm just crazy/blind? :silly:

Please excuse the frizz-o hair. Of course my umbrella broke on the way to the train and the rain ruined the blowout! Ha.
