Personalized (high quality) water bottle filled with little trinket things like hair accessories, chapstick, jewelery; a “nice for a five year old” piece of costume jewelry she’ll think is grown up, or a personalized sleeping bag/towel/tote if she does a sport/activity like soccer or dance from LL Bean/Lands End.

Maybe some cute swim towels and a swimming pool pass?

@SweetCaroline: My DD (7) asked for a fleece robe for Christmas and it's been a HUGE hit! Embroidered versions would be so nice for twins :)

My oldest loved a terrarium making kit she got last year (7th bday but I think younger kids would enjoy also). Probably from michaels. Fun to watch it grow. Michaels (or similar) also has tons of art supplies and kits, she liked a canvas she got where the outline of the picture was already on there and she painted between the lines. Any jewelry making kit or clay kit. Card games like old maid with a card holder (makes it easy for them to keep their hand of cards in place) - my oldest used to love that. We love sleeping queens too but my almost 5yo can’t play his own hand yet. Great for 6+ I think.

Another that crossed my mind, a bit of diy for you but my oldest just made borax crystals and loved it. We first tried a kit from five below and it didn’t work so that’s why I suggest diy. You could make a nice sheet of directions, include a big jar of borax, an empty jar to grow them in, white pipe cleaners, some fun string and the little Wilton gel colors below.

Tutorial we used (they also paint the edges and glue on a box but we didn’t do that) https://blog.etsy.com/en/how-tuesday-crystal-topped-jewelry-box/

Mini bottles of gel color: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KO6NAM4/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdb_t1_hJHfEb5GPDRBD

My daughter just turned five and arts and crafts supplies were some of her favorite gifts. She also got subscriptions to Highlights and National Geographic Kids magazines that she’s really enjoying - her grandparents gave her a highlights seek and find book with a note tucked in that a monthly subscription would be coming, and one of her uncles did something similar with the National Geographic magazine (some big animal sticker packs with a card about the subscription).

I think art sets are a great idea. DD got this one recently for her 5th birthday and has been loving it!

https://www.amazon.com/Foil-Art-Sticker-Activity-Set/dp/B01N0NY3VF/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=foil+art+kids&qid=1578501306&sr=8-10

Some other ideas that were hits in our house but not toys - magazine subscriptions, a new apron, birdhouse painting kit, and books.

I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend, but a fairly inexpensive craft could be one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0735349304/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_-mGfEbZGM6M4X My 5 year old craft loving boy got one for Christmas and LOOOVES it

I gave my favorite 5 year old a beautifully illustrated copy of the Secret Garden and wrote a sweet inscription. My dad read it to me in first grade (so, 5 might be a bit early) and I loved it! I even did my first "book report" on it in 1st grade (how my teacher took that, I have no idea!) I checked with her mom first, though.
Many of my classic books have messages from grandparents and aunts and uncles and I love reading them now.

Also, +1 for creative consumables. That's what I'm pushing when people ask what my DS (3) wants

My daughter is 6 but this Christmas we gave her ‘’make your own comic book’’ kits. Included a book of blank comic pages, stencils, a ‘’learn to draw book’’, some colored pencils and markers, and a comic book. It’s been a huge hit and is ultimately consumable.
