Our first child was completely unplanned, we were in high school, it was our first time ever with anyone AND we used a condom... Then about a week after getting married (about 3 years later) we started to have sex again I got a pregnancy scare ( I had the mirena) and naturally flipped out but then got sad because I realized I did want another baby so I took it out and 4 weeks later I got my positive test! So that one was fully planned :)

It wouldn’t say LO was “unplanned” but her timing was a bit of a surprise. We planned to stop using all birth control methods after my 30th bday in October. I had my IUD removed and for several months we used condoms and also charted and avoided fertile times. In September, although I was charting we decided one time to go sans raincoat, and bam; pregnant. It wasn’t a total shock, since well….we had sex and didn’t use protection every single time, but I was a little surprised it happened so quickly.

@Foodnerd81: I was wondering the same things after reading that poll! Our LO was planned, but I always wonder about the variety of 'unplanned' responses I see on here. To me, NTNP is 'planned,' because you are ok if it happens and obv know how a woman gets pregnant ;) but clearly to many women on here, it isn't 'planned'! I think of my 16 year old niece that got knocked up as unplanned lol. Everyone's opinion is valid though!

Ours was unplanned, but happened as a result of our schedules getting crazy when summer began, plus a combination of not charting carefully and an unusually long cycle (didn't have an O date yet but it had been so long I just figured that we missed it...wrong!). We weren't planning to try until this spring, but were excited that it happened when it did! (though we're way more broke than we wanted to be)

I would say that "unplanned" is a pregnancy where the parents were not actively trying and not "oh, lets go off birth control because I'd be fine if it happened".

C was the product of irresponsible drunk sex. We were not planning on having kids for several more years and we weren't wanting to be pregnant. I went off the pill because we were in a LDR and we were using other methods.... until we got really drunk at a 4th of July party and forgot. Shit happens.

I think that unplanned means you were actively trying to prevent it and birth control or user failed.

I know someone who got pregnant two months after marriage and said they never wanted kids... I have no idea what they were doing for BC but my brother laughed when he found out because he says it isn't easy to have an "accident" - so his definition is it's not really an accident if you forget to use a condom or miss a pill.

I would say it would be completely unplanned if we got pregnant right now because we ALWAYS use a a condom... if we missed it once, then I would say it was a user accident lol

Oh, I should say there is a difference between unplanned and accident. I think it's hard to have an "accident" but easy to have an unplanned.

Hmm, I think it's planned if you had the conversation about wanting a baby and agreed to go for it. If you weren't wanting a baby just now, it wasn't planned. So even for people that got lax about birth control, it's still not planned, because they weren't intending for it to happen. Conversely, if you were NTNP, I'd still say it was planned because you did have the conversation.

@Foodnerd81: Is it crazy that, although I'm married and it was not a total shocker, I still felt like a 16 year old who's condom broke when I told my parents. HAHA I was so nervous for some reason!

Well, i stopped taking my fertility medications because I needed a break. I had a suuuuuper long cycle and wasn't pregnant. So the next month, when i had a suuuuper long cycle again, I thought nothing of it. Well, I was a couple weeks late before I decided to test. Surprise! It was unplanned in the aspect that I really thought I needed the drugs to ovulate so I could get pregnant! It hadn't happened in so long, ya know?! But in the same breath, I still wanted to be pregnant because we'd been TTC for so long!

I feel like my situation is weird, haha. it was planned, but it wasn't....ah well. I'm the cliche of "stop trying and you'll get pregnant"

@Thehistoryofus: This is similar to what happened with us.

We weren't actively trying but I had gone off my birth control due to side effects. We figured we'd be fine with it if it happened but I was set to go back on a different birth control a couple of months later (I couldn't get an earlier appointment). So we knew what we were doing but we weren't actively trying so I consider her unplanned.

We got pregnant very quickly after getting married. I went off the pill and we weren't diligent about other protection methods. We knew what we were doing but we weren't planning anything.

I think an easy definition is that if you are actively trying then it was planned. If you weren't actively trying then it was unplanned whether it was from failed birth control, lax birth control, or whatever.

Ours was unplanned in the sense we though it was unlikely because of my severe PCOS.
We were planning on waiting till after our wedding.
Obviously when we stopped using protection we knew what could happen.
I hated when people asked if it was planned. None of your darn business. Not you bees of course.

I think our situation was the same as yours. I started charting, mostly just to get into the habit, and we started being pretty lax about everything. I totally thought it would take a while, a few months even, and then BAM pregnant. woah. Wasn't crazy shocked but shocked enough that it happened so soon.

The other thread reminded me of something I've been thinking about. We've all seen the stats saying half of all pregnancies are 'unplanned'. I always wonder what 'unplanned' means to different people-- it seems to me there is a really big variance. Unplanned could mean you were on the pill, used condoms, everything, and somehow something still happened, or if could be you thought it would take a while, so you were pretty lax about birth control, but boom, it happened faster than you thought. To me, those are really different situations. Or, for example, after I went off the pill we used a combo of condoms/pull out/charting, but we were not THAT careful with it since we were going to start TTC in a couple months anyway-- if I'd gotten pregnant it technically would be unplanned, but wouldn't have been that surprising, either.

So, if you had an unplanned pregnancy, and don't mind saying, how 'unplanned' was it? I'd add a poll but it seems like there are a million options!
