We did an unusual first name and a more generic (but still family and meaningful) middle name. It is nice that she can go by her MN if she wants to later on. Also, when people don't hear/understand me say her first name, I often will say her first and middle name.

Thanks so much everyone. Definitely given me something to think about. @JerricaBenton: Good luck with your debate : ) @Coco Bee: @Mrs. Lantern: Aw thanks, I really like it too! @sloaneandpuffy: You're probably right about it not being that unusual.. having said that, I've never met anyone called it, or the first name we're using, especially not in England which is probably where she'll end up going to school. Who knows though, she might be someone who loves having an individual name!

I have an unusual first name and a semi-normal middle name. Living in another country I have to say a lot of people glom onto the middle name because it's the only thing they can sound out and/or that sounds like a non-surname to them. So I'm super glad I don't have a very unusual middle name.

Having said that, I'm not sure Mireya is that unusual.... Not common but not way out there either.

I have a first name and last name that always must be spelled. It's frustrating to me and I wish my mother had named me Jennifer or Elizabeth or something everyone knows how to spell. This is our number one criteria for picking names, since our LO will have our unusual last name.

Just wanted to offer that perspective :) it gets really frustrating when my name is constantly having to be spelled out (and half the time the person gets it wrong anyway)...

Go with what feels right in your heart. It is your baby! We chose both an uncommon first and middle name for my LO and I am so glad we did. People raise their eyebrows but who cares! I think she suits her name beautifully.

This is the exact 'debate' that's currently going on in our house! We have chosen a fairly uncommon ethnic name for our girl that's also very feminine, and I really think we should pick a simple, strong, non-ethnic middle name in case she just hates it or feels that her first name doesn't fit her. That would make me a little sad, but I would want her to have options. My husband keeps suggesting all of these ethnic feminine middle names! I'm not much help to you, I know! I guess I am still undecided.

I have an unusual first and middle name, and it would have been nice to have a more recognizable name thrown in there. That said, at the ripe old age of 30, I'm pretty adjusted to it, but I still think it's nice to have an option for your LO because she is the one that will have to say it again, spell it, write it down, etc for everyone she meets. :) Just my thoughts, though!

@adnama: We're keeping the first name a secret because it's the only name we can agree on, seriously, lol. If we get negative comments and get put off it, we're out of ideas : ) The middle name I like is mireya. It means 'adored' in Spanish but the American meaning is 'miracle'. I have PCOS and never expected to get pregnant naturally, so it has real meaning for me. Also our last name is Spanish so it fits.

We gave our daughter a gender neutral first name but leans more toward the male side so we gave her a feminine middle name just incase later in life she wanted something more girly.

I have a pretty unusual first name, and my middle name is really simple (Lee). My first name is a pain to spell so when I have to give my full name, I'm grateful that my middle name is so easy. That being said, I hardly ever use my middle name so this doesn't come up that often! If you find two names you like and they are both unusual, go with it! Your LO will always have a conversation starter. People LOVE to talk about my first name.

We've decided on a fairly unusual name for our little girl. Now we're trying to decide whether to have an unusual middle name (I've found one I like) or have a more common middle name. DH's thought is then she can swap it if she likes. I'm not too keen on that idea, lol. What do ya think?
