We’ve visited with our new nephew (two months old) and it’s been indoors and unmasked. They also have a three year old who goes to daycare though. I would leave it up to the parents, it’s hard with newborns.

No personal experience, but I think I'd stick to outdoors and not having them very close unless your kid is masked. 6 weeks is just still so little...

FWIW, my kids have been in preschool since last June, and my sister just had a baby in February. We just, like literally this week, started spending time with the baby indoors. We did visit with her outdoors before now. All adults are now vaxxed, (we have been since April). The kids are not, but we all feel comfortable at the moment because local rates are so low (0.3 cases daily per 100,00, which is very exciting!). Local rates would be my personal threshold while kids are still too young to be vaxxed. There also have been very few cases in their school, and none at all since the end of last year. We did leave it up to my sister and BIL and their comfort level.

I think kids should wear masks forever! (Mostly joking) My kids have been in daycare since last June and we really enjoyed the long break from illness but now that we're opened up general illness is back. I think keeping the safeguards we've built into our interactions is smart for newborns. I wouldn't be surprised if masks for visitors around newborns became the norm for a while.

I'm sure I'll chill out about it soon but we're coming off Barf-o-rama 2021 so I'm a little amped up about germs right now.

I think your approach is right to ask - my gut answer is outside only, and masked if they’re up close, and then up to what they’re comfortable with. Cmon with that kids vaccine Pfizer!!

That's a tough one! I'd leave it up to the parents and do whatever they're comfortable. If I had a 6 week old, I think I would lean towards not having interactions with your daughter unless it was outside and she wasn't holding or snuggling the baby.

This is hard. My BFF just had a baby and she is letting cousins around the baby if the kids wear a mask. I think it depends on community transmission rates where you are too. Also, doing a rapid antigen test (available at Walgreens) before your daughter hangs with the baby would be an extra layer of precaution.

My 8 year old (obviously unvaxed) started camp today. This is her first exposure to bigger groups of kids since March 2020 (she was fully remote for school all year and only doing masked playdates outside with friends). The camp requires masking indoors and outdoors for the most part and we feel good about their precautions, however, I'm wondering about what to do about her interacting with her currently 6 week old cousin. Adults all are vaccinated (us parents and my BIL/SIL), but kids obviously aren't and my kid will be around others, even if mostly masked. She adores her cousin and I'd love for them to keep seeing each other but I also don't want to put anyone at risk. I told my BIL/SIL that we'll do whatever they're comfortable with, but wondering how others are handling this and interaction with unvaxed kids in general. Thanks!
