@hellobeeboston: That's what I think too! Like the body is training us to get used to interrupted sleep all night!

@Foodnerd81: Thanks, I might take your advice! As soon as I can be sure that congestion isn't due to all the stuff pouring out of my nose and throat...can't blame that on pregnancy. ;)

ughh.. sorry to hear it! the last couple months of my pregnancy I was up a ton. I started out looking at my phone & watching movies, but that just kept me up more. Eventually I would just lay in bed and try to get myself to fall asleep.... nothing really worked... but at night I would have some hot tea or milk, take a bath, and read before bed, that may have helped some.

On the plus side: I honestly feel like those nights awake really prepared me for having a newborn and then at least when I was up in the middle of the night I had a sweet baby to look at ;)

I was up until 2 a.m. last night simply because I wasn't tired (suddenly, even though I was exhausted all day). I don't like taking things for sleep, and Benadryl makes me too groggy the next day. Ugh! Joys of pregnancy.

I agree to stay away from the computer or Iphone-- the light tricks your brain into staying up longer. I still get insomnia sometimes, even prepreg, so I'm not looking forward to it at the end.

@tororojo: If you are stuffy, you should try Breath Right strips-- totally drug free, but the hold your nose open so you can breath better, which is awesome for this pregnancy congestion. It's also a super sexy look.

I have had a horrible cold the past couple of weeks and can't sleep for crap, even with Unisom (though it does help). I have done some crying/self-pitying and watched a lot of SVU and Criminal Minds. :)

@winniebee: I might have to pick up some of this Unisom. Never tried it. We also have a loud humidifier that already serves as our white noise. But maybe I'll try the bath thing tonight.

Cried!

I took unisom every night from 20 weeks on, my insomnia was terrible. Try a warm bath before bed and decompressing by reading before bed and turning off the iphone, etc. When my insomnia was bad, I would go to the guest bedroom. THe change of scenery helped. Also, white noise on my iphone.

@shopaholic: ugh, I totally feel for you. I had a pretty bad bout of insomnia last month that unfortunately was related to crazy hormones, panic attacks and a hospital stay. Glad it doesn't sound that bad for you! But, I concur with the Benadryl as being safe as a sleep aid - I was told that multiple times by my midwife and doctor.

I would also recommend starting a sleep/night routine. As hard as it was for me to give up the iPhone/iPad in bed, I think it has helped a lot. I don't "hang out" to read or relax in bed like I used to, in an attempt to train myself that the bed is just for sleep. I also tend to switch places if I am up in the middle of the night for more than 20 minutes or so. Sometimes just sleeping with my head at the foot of the bed does the trick, or even moving to the couch. The change of scenery seems to tricks my brain to "start over" and I can usually fall back asleep.

Best of luck to you!

@TurtleDoves: Thanks lady! But I still have 10 weeks! ahhh!
@MaisyMay: @hilsy85: I caved last night at 3 a.m. & took a Benedryl. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do!
@emg86: Hahah! I can totally see that! Pinterest has some super yummy food porn!
@Smurfette: @Mrs. Markers: Yeah, I will play with my phone of iPad in bed for at least an hour before I get up and about. Usually I end up on my phone at least 1 or 2xs a night now.

i read on my kindle iphone app... but i think it keeps me up more because of the light. i also go through emails and respond to any that i've missed! the crazy thing about this is that uninterrupted sleep is likely a thing of the past for the forseeable future

I have been waking up at 5 and takes me like an hour to fall back asleep. I usually lay in bed and just play on my phone.

So glad that I didn't wake up this morning at 5 since the alarm went off at 545 to go back to work.

I usually get insomnia for 2-3 hours before falling back asleep. Most of the time I try to read and avoid Pinterest because that usually makes me hungry :-) and if reading fails I start making myself busy. If I'm incredibly exhausted I try to drink chamomile tea and do some breathing excercises that calm me down. I miss uninterrupted sleep!!!

My doctor actually recommended benedryl just for sleep. Apparently it's the sleep agent in tylenol pm and is perfectly safe to use as a sleep aid. I know that for the last 4-5 weeks of pregnancy, it's the only way I slept. Now that LO is here, I don't need anything to fall asleep, except a sleepy LO...that one is harder to come by!

I remember this! Oh was it hard...:( nothing worked for me but all I can say it that, I had just enough stamina to get through labor and then I toooootally crashed after LO arrived. Good thing all they do is sleep those first 3 days! Because I was making up for like 4-5weeks of missed sleep;)
I'm sorry you're going through this, but baby is close!

Pregnancy insomnia seems to hit me at least every 2 or 3 days. I've already taken Benedryl the last few days for an itching cough and trying to get some sleep to stop the onset of bronchitis. Now, what do I do? I've cleaned up the guest bedroom, did a load of laundry, "liked" just about everyone's status on FB, pinned a million things, and read most of the posts on HB! argh! About to bite the bullet and take more Benedryl, though I really don't want to use it just to sleep.

What do you guys do when insomnia hits?
