Just to throw in another opinion about soy: everything I've been told from our feeding saga (currently ongoing) is that milk protein is the number one cause of allergy issues in babies and you definitely have to eliminate everything. Sensitivity to soy, I'm told from a few sources (pediatrician, LC) occurs in about 40% of cases. So on one hand, it's a high number. On the other hand, your plan of dairy first and then see sounds right in line with what I've been told to do.

@LovelyPlum: earth balance or coconut oil are great alternatives to butter.

For icing use water instead of milk.

I bet eliminating dairy will make a huge difference. J had an unusual presentation of dairy allergy, so it took awhile to diagnose. But he was a totally different baby once he was dairy free. So glad you found a pediatrician who listens, and hope things turn around quickly for your LO!

@Mae: we've eliminated soy in addition to dairy and I thought it would be super limiting but it really isn't! I've found delicious replacements for basically everything I used to eat (except cheese, Daiya ain't foolin' me!). It's all about focusing on what you CAN have vs. can't :)

@LovelyPlum: I don't think my kids are MSPI! I went off dairy when my ped casually suggested it but I reintroduced recently with no ill effects. I actually like the way I feel when I'm dairy free so I'm sort of sticking with it but not religiously!

@Mae: all the chex cereals are dairy/soy free. As is bare naked granola...there are other cereals as well but I can't recall off the top of my head. So get some almond milk and cereal and you have breakfast solved.

Carbs: Most fresh-baked loaves of French bread at the grocery store are MSPI friendly (except Walmart, I found. It has soy flour there).

Most gluten-free brands are also dairy free. You can buy some gluten free muffins for snacks.

Pasta is fine...and a lot of jarred sauces have soy oil but there always a couple of brands that don't (usually natural or organic brands).

Eggs are always good. I can give you a ton of more suggestions. The foods you bought today...just throw them in the freezer and they will be there in two weeks. =) Good luck!

@Anagram: nope you're right! i just went and got the can. I could've sworn yesterday when I opened it I read it was soy-- but I was also sleep deprived and hadn't eaten all day yet and was trying to just get some food in the baby so I could sit down and have a glass of water lol. So I guess I can try the balls to the wall no dairy or soy approach--- I just don't know what i'm going to eat! especially because I just went grocery shopping this morning with just milk avoidance in mind. All the carby stuff I got (bread, buns, tortillas) says dairy free but not soy free. My issue is that I am not a big meat or vegetable person. I will eat chicken, but mostly only cut up into little bits in tacos or on pizza or something. I'm all about the carbs and cheese :) Can I just eat oatmeal for a two weeks? lol At least I like that and know its safe... sigh.

@fussygal: eh, it's my own fault. You'd think I'd have learned to read labels by now. But I've been playing it kind of fast-and-loose with the food lately since I've almost got her totally transitioned to hemp milk. But wouldn't you know it, for some crazy reason dh put 3 oz of BM in her bottle before bed...and sure enough. ugh.

@Mae: I don't know if there's a new nutragimen on the market I don't know about, but the traditional one is not made from soy. It's hydrolyzed dairy (the proteins are taken out) and mostly corn syrup solids. It has soy oil in it though, which is why I had to get Neocate. I still have a sample of regular Nutragimen at home and just looked at the ingredients and only oils (combinations of palm, sunflower, coconut, and soy) are present. No other soy.

Is there a new soy Nutragimen? Did the doctor say why she was prescribing it?

Great update! And I third (or fourth?) the full on dairy elimination. We noticed a huge difference within a week of cutting ALL dairy (whey and casein included). I accidentally ate a SMALL amount of hummus (of all things!) that had dairy and it was back to spit up and green poop for 3 days.

I found that it was terrible at first, but once you get into the routine of looking at the ingredients it's not too bad. There's just a lot of hidden dairy in things! Oreos are dairy free though

@Mae: Great news on the doctor. I would also suggest going 100% dairy and soy free for 2 weeks. Two weeks really isn't that hard (I can practically give you a whole meal plan if you want, and it won't be hard-to-cook recipes either...sadly, I have found tons of processed MSPI foods and rely on them a lot).

Think of it this way: If you spend two weeks eliminating only major forms of dairy and see no improvement in your LO, you'll be discouraged, you still won't really know if it's an intolerance and you need further elimination or if it's not dairy problems at all, and your LO could still be in pain. You'll just have a lot of unanswered questions and a kind-of wasted two weeks. Or you can just eliminate both dairy and soy 100% for two weeks and you'll know immediately--either your LOs condition will not improve (in which case, you might want to try something other than nutragimen) or it will improve and you'll have a quick answer.

@mae yeah I'm no expert but like I said- even a tiny bit of butter or cheese immediately saw a reaction in him the same day. It took about a week to see a clear difference. I half assed it before that and saw no difference, I had to go all out. I didn't read for traces but it ended up being easier to just avoid processed foods.

Good news is he outgrew it around 6 months.

@Mae: Yeah if you switch to the Nutramagin (which is broken down dairy based formula) from the soy formula, you could just try eliminating dairy. Otherwise, you'd probably have to switch to Neocate or Elecare formula, which is dairy and soy free.

ETA: it also depends on how sensitive your LO is. I would do dairy free and see if she improves.

@brownie: well she is on a soy formula now (nutramigen is soy based) so I can't imagine my eating soy will make a difference one way or another? I only produce about 15 oz/day so she gets the rest of her food in formula.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: @skipra: I'm not sure why the doc is more concerned about dairy than soy? she didn't mention soy at all but she gave us a case of the nutramigen to try with her. Maybe if we don't see any improvement in a week or two and can't figure anything else out I'll ask about removing soy too?

@Mae: I eliminated all dairy and soy except for things saying may contain traces or manufactured in the same facility, etc. The ped we saw said it's best to eliminate all and once it's out of the system to test it. I had something that said may contain soy and he is a little fussy today and not eating as much so that might be the next thing to go.
