thanks for all the feedback.

I have no idea if he would climb out or not but based on his personality, i wouldn't put it past him. do the floor bed rails really work?

I guess it depends on if you think your guy will end up climbing out of the crib soon. If not, I'd get another crib. My LO will be 3 in a few months but I don't think he'll ever climb out. He's way too cautious. So I plan to keep him contained in the crib for as long as possible, which will probably just be until he outgrows it! You can find pretty cheap ones at IKEA that are durable.

I'd just go with a bed and skip the crib. What is the reason for waiting until 2? If he is outgrowing the mini crib could you get a bed sooner?

We got DS a bed at 2.5 at this time he hadn't tried climbing out of the crib. It took him a good couple months before he even figured he could climb out of the bed.

I'd say real bed at 2 (we transitioned at 2 but from bedspring) unless you plan to have another and would ditch the mini crib and let the baby use a real crib...

My LO transitioned to a bed at 21 months so my vote would be to do that soon rather than buy a new crib.

I think I would just save the money and move to a regular bed. You can put guard rails on it. DD is 2.5 and we converted her crib to a toddler bed because she was climbing out, but if we hadn't had that option we would have just put her in a regular bed.

My son was done with his crib by the time he was 20 months, but I wouldn't have known it at the time it was happening.

He moved to a full sized bed with rails.

Real bed at 2. You can always get a rail or two for the open sides of a twin or full bed

I think I would buy a cheaper crib. WEve been really happy with our graco. It technically can convert but weve just used it as a crib. I feel like using a mini crib would be hard until age 2. My guy has done it when we visited my mom but he was all pressed up against the sides. He slept much better in the full size crib.

There isn't really a wrong option. We moved our first to a crib and stayed there until he was well over two. Now at 3.5 (and 40 inches tall!) We need to buy him a big bed because he's in a toddler bed which is a crib size mattress. He doesn't seem to mind it though.
But our second child got moved to a queen sized floor bed before she turned one. That's worked well for her, too.
In general, I think that if you transition to a bed before a child climbs out of the crib, they often tend to treat the bed like a crib and not climb out.

My little guy is 19 months old and has been sleeping in a mini crib since day 1. We had always lived in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment, but now we've moved to a new city and live in a spacious house. He's still happy in his mini crib, but hes getting to the point where he needs more room.

SO!

Do I buy a full size crib at this point (maybe a 4 in 1 so i can keep using it?) or wait it out with the mini crib until 2 or so when I could in theory put him into a real bed or a floor bed?

He likes sleep and sleeps well and I really don't wanna mess with that. And I like knowing he's contained in the crib and not roaming around his room. However, I also dont wanna buy unnecessary things nor spend money in the wrong way.

Thanks!!
