We have the Cruz and a Maxi Cosi, which snaps into the Cruz with two small adapters. We used the combo ALL THE TIME in the beginning. I never thought I'd be one of those people that leaves LO in the car seat when they're out and about, but he loved the car seat and was a sleepy little guy early on so I never wanted to move him. Because of that, I don't think I would have used the bassinet with the stroller anyway. LO is 7 months and we still use the car seat/stroller combo on short trips where we are in and out of the car, we only use the stroller seat on walks and in this weather those are rare.

I have a Vista and love the basinette option, I don't know if I would have bought it separately but I liked going for walks with it and used it for overnight sleep when we were travelling. I tried to avoid using the car seat too much (which I still used, since the car seat is so convenient with the stroller).

I have a different stroller but it came with a bassinet option and I love it!! It was only like $80. We never bought it for her to sleep in, just for walks and stuff. But it's like a little playpen on wheels. Get it!

We had the Vista (got it before the new Uppababy styles were added) and used the bassinet both for walking out and about in Brooklyn and also for nighttime sleep, for about the first three months. My LO didn't mind lying down flat for that time. I did get a Noggin Nest because I worried about "flat head" with her lying flat on her back so much.

i have the 2015 cruz (love!!) and we also did not do the bassinet option. we also didn't do a infant carseat b/c i didn't want to keep my LO in a carseat outside the car. we did buy the infant insert and used it on the lowest recline from the beginning.. found it much more streamlined (can fold with insert in) and loved the look! LO seemed very comfortable in the infant insert also :)

I loved having the bassinet option for the stroller. In Europe, where my son was born, parents are advised to only use the car seat when the babies are actually in the car, because of airway constriction concerns. We weren't dealing with reflux, but had we been, I would have probably not relied on the bassinet for so long.

I had a bassinet for my B-ready and saw bassinets everywhere in Hoboken, so assumed I *had* to have one, but my LO was another one that hated laying flat. She would just fuss and fuss if she was in the bassinet, so I quickly stopped even trying it, and just used the car seat all the time until she was old enough for the regular seat at 4 months.

But, I did have friends whose LOs loved their bassinets--my LO had reflux pretty bad, so that probably contributed to the hate.

We have the Cruz and the Mesa and the bassinet. We used the bassinet exclusively for the first month except when driving (which was rare since we're in NYC-- only for cabs to drs appointments). She slept in the bassinet inside as well as using it for walks. I felt like it made us more portable-- she would fall asleep nursing then I could transfer her to the bassinet easily, then go for a walk which I needed for my sanity! After a month she started sleeping in her crib and then started protesting walks laying flat so we switched to babywearing or the Mesa for walks (we didn't have the snug seat so didn't use the normal cruz seat for awhile)

@LindsayInNY: random question but did you see the 2015 cruz in store? We've preordered it but it doesn't come in for at least another month and I was wondering how the new wheels are compared to the old Cruz?

We aren't doing a bassinet, just using the car seat for early walks or a carrier

I have the vista and only used the basinet a couple times. Like to set her in while we had lunch outside. It definitely wasn't a critical piece. When I took her for a walk in it, I felt like she jumbled around and couldn't be kept still. We didn't use the bucket seat that much, either. I tended to wear her because she would wake up once we got where we were going, and wouldn't just stay asleep in the bucket seat

@LindsayInNY: I think in general you're supposed to keep them on a flat surface to sleep and in "baby containers" for as little time as possible, so they frown on making it a habit to have babies nap in car seats. That's why we just left the Mesa in the car and had him nap in the bassinet, but our outings with a newborn were so short anyway that we didn't feel bad taking him out in the car seat.

@Foodnerd81: I think DH told me he installed the Mesa in his car without the base and that it was designed to be easy to install that way, but I never actually watched him do it.

The Mesa adapters for the Vista are really small so the day I realized we were done with the infant seat I just unclipped them and tossed them into a pocket in the basket. What I really loved was the UB Cabana, which popped open and kept him sheltered from rain or bugs or sun!

@LindsayInNY: I think has to do with the the way the airway is restricted/positioned when baby is in the car seat for too long.

I loved the bassinet option, but I think using the toddler seat fully reclined like @lawbee11: said is totally a great option too.

@dc yoga bee: I was totally unclear- I meant install in the car, unrelated to the stroller. So if you wanted to use it in a car other than yor own, you might have to take the base out of your car. But I never had it or tried it. I'm going to edit my post so te more clear.

Our OB office was plastered with "DO NOT KEEP YOUR INFANT IN THE CARSEAT" (except for short trips in the car). So, we got the bassinet and I am SO glad we did. She ended up HATING the carseat anyhow, so we were very happy to let her stretch in the bassinet and she was too.

@LindsayInNY: I think it depends on your LO. My kid HATED the infant car seat, so I think I used the car seat attachment on the vista twice? We used the bassinet for a sleep space indoors or if we were going to be out a while. But for regular strolling around, I reclined all the way back with the infant insert.

I have the vista and was so sure we'd use the bassinet all the time. We just don't! I do like the all black frame though, so I'm glad we got it. We have the mesa and like it a lot, especially because it fits into the stroller with very small adapters (vs other brands that have big clunky adapters that have to be removed to fold the frame). I believe the Cruz doesn't even need adapters for the mesa!

I have the vista so it came with the bassinet, and I rarely drive so walk everywhere. I figured we would use the bassinet all the time, was insistent that we get it... She hated it with a passion. Some kids love it and I do think laying flat is better, but my baby did not agree. If you buy it, can you return it if you don't like it?
Also if you have stairs to get inside, it's easier to carry baby up in the car seat than the bassinet, if they fall asleep on the walk.

So I would say you probably don't need it.

As for the Mesa I heard it's almost impossible to install in the car without the base. Anyone who has it experienced that?

So we have the Cruz, the Vista, and the Mesa and can compare all three...we used the Vista bassinet for daytime sleep with a Jolly Jumper rocker base. It worked great to have downstairs with us. When we went out we used the Mesa. I don't think I would have bothered taking the bassinet out honestly. And if you're 100% for sure going to buy the Cruz and would only need to decide about buying a separate bassinet, I wouldn't even bother if you already had definite arrangements for daytime sleep.

We have the Cruz and Mesa and we LOVE them. I've heard the Cruz can be better because the Vista is a little big for taking into stores at the mall like Gap. It's not an issue in stores like target because they have big isles. I think the bassinet is fine to use for the baby to sleep in (although the there are cheaper and better options out there I highly recommend the Basinest), but it is completely uneassesary if you don't plan to use it for sleeping. Your baby may not even like laying flat. Mine would scream blood murder if I tried to lay him flat on a walk. He wants to see out. You would only use it for walks for maybe 3 months at the most. That's a lot of money to spend on something to use for walks for such a short amount of time.

@LindsayInNY: I don't think so. We have the infant insert so anytime we drove anywhere we used the car seat with the Cruz frame. Anytime we wanted to walk somewhere we used the infant insert with the Cruz in the reclined flat position. I don't see any need for the bassinet (and if storage is an issue for you the infant insert takes up much less space).

@lawbee11: We walk a good amount but is the benefit of the bassinet (laying flat) that much better than the car seat?

We have the Cruz but not bassinet. We live in the burbs, though, so the bassinet would only get used for walking around the block. If you walk more than drive it may be worth it.
