As background, I had a December baby in the DC/VA area. We rarely used the car, and went on lots of walks in the neighborhood (through snow, rain, ice, etc. ha).

I have the Vista, and it was a workhorse! Loved the big basket, and the big wheels were great in the snow, over uneven sidewalks, etc. We never used a car seat in the stroller; started right away with the infant snug seat insert with the stroller seat in full recline. We used the bassinet for night sleep at home for the first couple of months (my kiddo was tall and out-grew it faster than I had hoped!), so we got a lot of use out of it.

Lo slept in the bassinet for the first month almost exclusively (except when she was on top of me) so we def used it! I can't remember how long we used it for walks too. We have the Cruz so we bought it separately

Eta we have the Mesa too and never had the snugseat. Also we live in a city with winters and have loved the Cruz, it's still in perfect condition after 2+ years

October baby- it was fairly mild and I used it all the time and took a walk each day. In Jan/Feb we got a ton of snow- so much that I ended up using a Solly wrap or the Ergo when we walked. We are in the suburbs though.

I used it a lot with my first two.
I think the cruz makes a good mall stroller but I needed the big basket and big wheels of the Vista living downtown in the North.
We have a car seat adapter and use that for short trips. I mainly use the seat if we're walking somewhere. I don't like babies in car seats outside of the car.

@Goldengirl: From my understanding, the airway concern has to do with the carseat not being at an angle when it's not placed in a base. A baby can be in the carseat for any length of time with no concerns for airway. However, people then take the carseat out of the base with a sleeping baby, and set the carseat down, allowing the baby to continuing sleeping. But then, it is no longer at the proper angle.
My understanding is that most of the carseat adaptors on strollers would enforce the same correct angle as required on the carseat base, no?
You can test it out. Most carseats have the little ball indicator that it's in proper alignment. Mine did, and there was one or two times it was off and we had to use a towel/pool noodle to get the angle correct.

We have the car seat adapters for the infant seat and the bassinet, we used both. Worth it depends on the $$ difference and how much that means to you. I like having the options and will have it for subsequent children.

Definitely test them! I thought I wanted the Vista until I went to try them. I got the Cruz and am super happy with it! It is smaller than the Vista and lighter which is nice because I am constantly taking it in and out of the trunk. We also got the Mesa car seat- Which I also love. It was so nice to just snap the seat on and not have to take the baby in and out of the car seat to run errands. I used the snugseat for walks around the neighborhood. Totally recommend the Cruz!

We used the bassinet for the first 4-5 months for both kids. I really don't like leaving babies in the carseat for long periods of time, not to mention that both my kids hated their infant carseats. We loved the bassinet--and I agree with the comment that it's very easy to keep baby warm in there in cold weather--I had two October babies and we went on walks almost daily through the winter, and they were always toasty warm and cozy in their bassinets.

@Goldengirl: our neighborhood has really uneven sidewalks (brick/some cobblestone, a bunch of super old tree roots in various spots) so I was worried that he would be jostled too much and used the car seat adaptor instead. I don't think this is an actual problem, just crazy FTM!

@Goldengirl: I used the vista bassinet as my actual bassinet in the house, but never with the stroller (2 October babies - FYI). We always used the snug seat and reclined back and it was perfect. I don't like to "stroll" with my car seat so if we were really walking, I always put them in the seat. If I was running errands in the car and we were in and out of places fairly quickly, I used the car seat adaptor. super long answer to say - no, it's not necessary at all.

@jape14: What were you nervous about with the bassinet? Or you mean you didn't use stroller at all?

@Charm54: I definitely see the bonus of having it as a sleep solution. Although my plan for sleeping is pack 'n play which I imagine I'd eventually want to get anyway for other reasons... so not sure if it would actually save $ in long run. So many choices!

We never used the bassinet with the stroller but my older son slept in it for 4 months. We upgraded to the 2015 Vista when I had a second but since we also got a Bassinest, the bassinet is still in the box.

@Goldengirl: I mean, no stroller is going to be great in the snow. Will you be putting it in your car or having to fold it a lot? I can just leave ours open in our building garage don't don't mind the extra size.

We used the bassinet for night sleep for 4 months for both girls. So I saved $$ by not having to buy a separate bassinet or co sleeper, so in that way it was nice.

I also preferred to walk her in the bassinet as an infant. If we were out and about doing errands in and out of the car, we used the car seat but otherwise she looked a lot more comfortable for our long walks in the bassinet.

I don't think it's 100% couldn't live without it necessary, but it was really nice to have.

@Foodnerd81: Thanks! I live in the city with bad winters too :( Which is why I'm so torn. I really prefer the size + weight of the Cruz but am worried about the tires. Although some people seem to say they held up just fine even in a bad winter. I know they improved them on the most recent model, maybe that helped. It is so crazy and ridiculous how much I've read about these strollers, I never thought I'd get sucked into any of this stuff ;)

I was adamant that we have the bassinet for our vista for the reason you mentioned. My baby hated it so much. Eventually I gave in and got the car seat adapter and she was so much happier.

So if that's that only thing pulling you towards the vista I would go with the Cruz. I chose vista because I wanted the bigger wheels (we live in the city with bumpy streets and hard winters) and so I could make it a double down the line. The Cruz is that much more compact which is really nice.

@tinyperson: Due November! It's interesting you say that because I read a lot of people say they didn't use it in the winter because they weren't strolling much. But I guess that is not always the case! I am torn :)

@Lilbear: I've heard about this, with the reflux.. I guess hard to know that in advance!

I think what I'm a bit confused about is that so many strollers are marketed to work as a travel system with the car seat (like the Mesa) which is what I imagined I'd do. But then I read so many articles saying it's bad to keep them in a car seat outside of a car because of restriction to airway. Yet if it's not recommended, why does this seem like a popular option people choose? It's so hard figuring this stuff out :silly: Just want to do what's safe + comfy for baby!

When is baby due? We have a bugaboo cameleon and used the bassinet a lot with our December baby. It was easy to keep her really cozy in a snowsuit and blankets. We've barely used the bassinet with our new LO born in May, but that could be because we have a 3yo and I'm babywearing a lot this time.

Totally not worth it. We never used it once! We got the vista before LO2 was born and he had mild/silent reflux (apparently 75% of babies have some form of reflux FYI) so we could never lay him flat. We just reclined the regular seat all the way back so he was still on a bit of an incline to ease his reflux. He slept in a rock n play at night as a newborn for the same reason

I've narrowed my stroller choice down to Uppababy Cruz or Vista. Still need to test them both out before deciding.

If you own either of these strollers, did you find the bassinet was necessary/used a lot? I know the bassinet is a big selling point of the Vista (even though you can buy it separately for the Cruz but not sure if I'd do that) and it seems some people say totally not worth it and others says couldn't have lived without it. What was your experience?

I was heavily leaning toward the Cruz and using it with the Mesa car seat for the infant stage, but know a lot of people say it's a no-no to keep baby in the car seat longer than needed, and better to lie flat. There is also the option of the infant snugseat with the Cruz and reclining the Cruz totally flat... which seems like an ok alternative to me?

If you don't have an UB but still used a bassinet with your stroller (or didn't), please feel free to chime in too!
