@gotkimchi: 90 degrees is fine! Mine opens to like 75/80 degrees and it's such a pain to get things into the hinge side. It's also just in an odd location, though. I only use that cabinet for storing things we use once a year.

@SugarplumsMom:  I think we're going to go for the bigger cabinet! After we went and measures my husband agreed he think it will open enough to not matter

I agree with @T.H.O.U.

90 degrees is as good as open all the way

We are renovating our kitchen as well, and I don't think our cabinets will be symmetrical around the hood. I think it will be fine. Yes, when I stare at it, it will bug me. But I don't think most people will notice a 3 inch difference when they walk into a beautiful new kitchen. So I vote #1! :silly:

@gotkimchi: if you can get it to 90* that would be fine because it's no different than opening a cabinet that's up against a wall.

No way would I do open shelves around a stove. All that grease and stuff would be so dirty all the time.

I think you can go either way. Because the shorter one is up against that corner I can't notice it that much.

When you say a bigger one wouldn't open all the way would it at least open to 90*?

@gotkimchi: I think I'd prefer to make the right cabinet bigger, even if it doesn't open so well. I also like open shelves, but it makes it so much easier to be able to close a door and not have worry about dust.

@SugarplumsMom: I thought of that but no, with the larger cabinet I don't think it would open at all. It would hit the angled wall first

I voted to make the right cabinet bigger, but I agree that open shelving would be good for that situation instead of not being able to open all the way. I would do open shelving on the left also to make it looks uniformed

Asymmetrical would drive me nuts! Would putting the hinge on the opposite end (so the doors opens the other way) help at all?

I am not a big fan of open shelving but in this scenario I agree with @brownepiano that it seems like the best solution. If you keep the cabinets, I wouldn't leave it asymmetrical and having a cabinet that didn't open all the way would drive me nuts (I have one in my kitchen and when we renovate it has to GO). So I guess option 2.

I love open shelves, so I'd skip the cabinets and put in open shelves. That way the shelves can go clear to the wall on either side. Otherwise I'd do different size cabinets and make up the space on the right with shelves.

The upper cabinets next to the hood have 3 inches difference the one on the left is 21 inches, the right is 18 inches so we have enough clearance to open it. My husband and I disagree about what to do here. Would you, leave it unequal, make the left one smaller with a piece of filler board, or make the right one larger but you might not be able to swing the door open 100%
