@Mrs. Pink: I agree... I also think just way too much unrealistic pressure gets put on Christmas in several ways.... but you could totally tell the kids santa got into some weather or something if you are already doing the santa embellishments!

My family is one that missed getting presents by Christmas Eve because of the delay. Even so, I would not have wanted someone working on Christmas Day, when they could have been home with their families. Good for those companies for sticking with their holidays and not making the delivery people work Christmas Day!!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: personally, I think they should be closed- Christmas is celebrated by plenty of people who do not identify themselves as Christians (my SIL and her family are atheist)-- so I don't really think that part makes much difference (FWIW, I do think that businesses should make more of an effort to accommodate people being off for other religions holidays like Hanukkah as well-- at least one day of their choosing, since all 8 would probably be difficult to coordinate)

ETA: they could do volunteers for Holiday Pay, but I'm sure that would turn into a situation where UPS would just start charging more for package delivery around the holidays to account for that, just in case packages are late and they have to resort to that sort of thing... most major companies are all about that dollar!

I have had to work on Christmases before-- ALL DAY-- and it sucks- I would not want to wish that on anyone. This is the first Christmas in 5 years I've had at home because I happen to be on maternity leave.

"Back in the Day" businesses used to be closed on Sundays and Holidays-- it's only been since businesses decided their bottom line was more important that they've been open. Even a few years ago malls were mostly closed Thanksgiving-- until they realized they could make more money. I think it sucks and is kind of greedy.

I think that even if someone doesn't celebrate, having the day off to spend time with your family sure is nice- especially during one of the most stressful times of the year for anyone working in retail or delivery!

@Mrs. Pink: Christmas is a Christian holiday. Surely, UPS' workforce is diverse enough that working on the Christmas is not a hardship for all.

Movie theatres are open on Christmas. Auto insurance companies Claims departments are open. Not all businesses close operations on Christmas.

It's really unfortunate that UPS had trouble delivering packages by Christmas Eve-- but seriously... why would people want the drivers to be punished by being forced to work on Christmas Day?

Weather happens... delays happen. It's not like they can control something like this. The drivers themselves are not the ones who screwed up, why should they be denied Christmas with their families?

I agree, they should refund the difference between what you paid for and what you ended up getting (or the store that guaranteed you the delivery should refund)

I know people are going to think "Well, gee, your baby is barely conscious of Christmas, what do you know?" but here's the thing... as a kid, I would have probably believed anything my parents told me about Santa when I was still a believer... so if they said "You know what? Santa called this morning and said he's really sorry that you didn't get XYZ present, there was a big storm over the North Pole and a couple presents got delayed/fell off the sleigh/got lost over the Pacific Ocean... but he said don't worry, he's sending Rudolph to bring it right away along with a couple extra candy canes" I wouldn't have freaked out. People need to have a little imagination with their kids...

Santa is in fact something we embellish in the first place, so a little more embellishment in a situation like that isn't going to hurt-- and it could help kids learn that sometimes, things don't go as planned, you don't get everything you want all the time and sometimes, you have to wait a little bit.

I saw an AP article saying it was both UPS and FedEx, and that a lot of it had to do with the weather and the volume of packages exceeding the system's capacity.

@Kimberlybee: in the article, a woman is quoted saying almost what you said...Christmas is not about the gifts, then errr, but it is about the gifts. My mom canceled Christmas this year because I didn't want to exchange gifts.

If I was a child whose family was still doing the Santa thing and my coveted toy or a few toys were missing under the tree my parents would have a hard time explaining how Santa showed up later the day or two after. I would have internalized that I did something wrong for Santa to skip over me. The more I think about it UPS should have delivered.

I'm glad they didn't work. Even if they asked for volunteers, workers might have felt they had to work, when they would have rather stayed home. Or their families would like to have them home. Christmas is not only about gifts. Having said that, if UPS is really that bad, they should start making changes or they are going to lose customers (like Amazon, which I imagine would be s huge loss for UPS).

I think they should let UPS EEs volunteer to work on Christmas day if they want to. Some may even need the extra income, I'm sure. I ordered stuff from Amazon but it didn't need to be delivered by Christmas so it's no big deal. But I did wonder why it was taking so long?

My cousin's gift to our nieces and nephews did not arrive yet and she was very upset because she paid extra for the expedited fee. Hopefully they can refund the difference but I think it's not worth getting upset over. The kids will be just as excited to get it tomorrow or the day after. It will make Christmas last just a bit longer. Besides, Christmas should not be about gifts, it's about spending time with family and friends. The UPS workers need a day off too.

I ordered a bunch of last minute things on Monday via Amazon Prime and fortunately everything was delivered on Tuesday as promised. I hadn't heard that there were issues until I started seeing posts on FB. Several people actually posted that they DID receive UPS deliveries today. I think it should have been optional, with holiday pay to anyone (driver or not) who worked today.

@mrbee: I agree with you on all of that but the news is focusing on those receiving items. But I think with as much information as is out and UPS being the scapegoat, I think they will do something. I think the Target issue and ability to recover will be a major factor in this as well. These very visible problems and how they try to make consumers trust them again.

Now I do feel as if it is just as much consumers faults for waiting until the last minute to purchase gifts online and send them. Not that those are the only problems that got caught up.

In my years as a customer, I've found UPS' business practices to be constantly disappointing. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't refund/credit money to their customers (package senders) *or* the retailers like Amazon who offer UPS as a delivery option. But maybe surprise everyone in how they handle this!

@mrbee: Well, actually most of the people who are receiving the packages aren't the customers. The customers are the people who paid for the package and they would need to get the refunds. And companies like Amazon that will be refunding those shipping fees should be made whole by UPS (and apparently FedEx). What it does do is make a very bad impression for others who may think to use them next year. UPS is getting the brunt of it this year but all of the delivery companies are backed up.

Without reading the article, I think if they say they'll deliver by x date they should make every effort to do that or refund customers... Including paying more for OT.

Certain jobs don't get traditional holidays. Ups should decide what they want to do and follow through but I am not a fan of businesses biting off more than they can chew during the holidays.

I don't think working on Christmas would fix the issue bc most ppl aren't home all day on Christmas. I do think ups did a horrible job of planning and totally botched this whole season. I had 2 things late with guaranteed delivery. Which apparently " guatanteed" means exactly nothing if your store ships ups. I always pick places that ship fedex if possible bc ups has always sucked, but it's a bummer amazon switched to ups for us this year!

@mrbee: I get the distinction, but still don't get what the big deal is whether a package comes the 24th vs the 26th. I highly doubt that the higher ups who were ultimately responsible for the cutbacks and ensuing labor shortages would be the ones working - it's the rank and file who have been busting their butts who would miss Christmas.

UPS is free to renege on their promise, and give their employees a day off. But I think they still owe something to the customers who relied on the promise that UPS had made them.

I think they should get a day off! Everyone who was up in arms about shopping on thanksgiving thinks UPS should deliver on Christmas Day? We saw a UPS guy literally SPRINTING down a driveway at 5 pm on the 23rd. They've been working like crazy lately. I don't really see how it's the end of the world if one of your presents is a day or two late.

Eh my private trash collection picked up on Xmas so I guess I feel like if they offered workers to work Christmas it would be their choice and it would have helped the situation. Of course everyone deserves to be home but if it were a choice to work than I guess I don't see a problem.

Poor planning by ups.

My sil slaves over Christmas cookies - like Martha Stewart type ones. And over half were not received in time. Sad.
