My LOs stump fell off really early too and oozed and was scabby and gross, but no one had ever messed with it. The ped even put a little silver nitrate to help it heal or something (after it had fallen off on its own). I think they are just gross no matter what.

We had a really horrible experience with a shot (with a nurse that was training), and I didn't say anything. It really weighed on me ... Next time, I was able to speak up, because I had the previous experience to guide me. Be gentle with yourself!!

And, that cord smell was horrible, but when you're out of your brain with new mom hormones, it's funny that you don't care, right?!? :)

 I'm non confrontational too.. Plus you would think a doctor knows what they are doing! I would have been upset too. I hope it will heal and not be infected!

@Mrs. Sunshine: with my first, his stump fell off after 5 days- without us doing anything. I just want my newborn's belly button to heal!

@littlejoy: my DH said the same thing. I just can't help but be mad at myself. I usually have no problem speaking my mind- why couldn't I do that with a dr?? And yes, it was really smelly, but I didn't care!

That's weird of that dr. Maybe find a new one, and yeah, take it as a learning experience to voice your discomfort or questions in the future. Sorry you went through that. I used to trust all drs. No more!

Parenting is a learning experience. I'm sorry you went through that, but now you have a point of reference for what makes you uncomfortable, and I'm sure you'll say something in the future.

My daughters stump fell off at 4 days!! We never messed with it or anything. It was stinky (so stinky), but the midwives said it was totally normal. The redness happened to her too. We used coconut oil and avoided touching the area. It healed by 12 days. Best wishes & congrats on your sweet babe.

I would be mad too but if it makes you feel any better my LO'S stump fell off without ever being messed with at like 8 days old or something like that. I freaked out and called my mom and my ped but it was fine.

Vent/rant:
So my son was born on Friday the 19th and we had a dr appt the following Monday. The dr took a look at his umbilical stump and commented on how after a while, it can begin to smell. He then proceeded to pull in the stump (pretty hard) and clean it with an alcohol wipe. He was just so rough that it made me cringe. I'm actually pretty mad at myself for not saying anything at the time and sticking up for my son. (I was told with my first to always leave the stump alone). I guess I just figured well, he's a dr, he should know. Well, a couple days later, his stump fell off- clearly before it was ready to. Now it's still red, and trying to re-scab over. It doesn't look infected (redness not spreading, no foul odor, no discharge) but it's also taking forever to heal. Ugh. Vent over.
