Haha. I would totally tell my mom I told you so, but she doesn't know we are TTC yet. But seriously, thank you ladies for all the feedback!

I would be in heaven if I could walk to a store that close. Heaven. Stroller trips are so much easier than getting in the car.

It depends on how busy I am. In general, I prefer walking, although in bad weather, or if I'm running late, then the car wins out. I find it so much easier to pop DD in her stroller than to fasten her into her carseat (where she usually does not want to go peacefully). She loves being outside, which is an extra bonus for doing things on foot.

I am a nanny and I far prefer working with families who are within walking distance of things and my husband and I bought a house within walking distance of all the typical places we frequent. I find the biggest issue with driving is not the one and done stops it is when you need to go to the grocery store, the dry cleaners and the pet store-- all of that in and out is really hard on a toddler. We can do all of those errands on foot and the toddler can hang out in the stroller the whole time or we hang out in the park for twenty minutes to burn off some steam between errands. Granted you can't do a huge grocery run with just a stroller but we tend to do a big stock up once a month with the car and then do walking trips for the rest of the time.

I hear you on the affordability part, even within our same town we could have bought a 4 bedroom place instead of 3 had we been willing to move further away from the Main street area. We really struggled with the decision and our realtor thought we were a bit nuts but I am so glad we did it.

Thanks ladies, this is soooooooo helpful! I am definately going to push for walking distance location. It's just tough given how 1) expensive the housing market remains where I am in terms of affordability; 2) how little is on the market.

I have never wanted to do the whole drive until you can afford thing. We may even keep renting given how close we are to great stuff currently and for cheaper than buying.

I think it just depends on age. When lo was a baby walking would have been fine. Now she's a toddler and she hates her stroller.

I also like to do a big shopping trip so I need my trunk.

I have lived in cities since college and haven't ever owned a car as an adult. Walking with LO in the stroller has never been a big deal. Since LO's arrival, we have never lived more than a 15min walk from a grocery store. Just be sure you get a stroller with a reasonable sized shopping basket underneath. We have a Maclaren, and while there are many aspects of it that I love, especially for cities, the basket is too small for any serious grocery shopping. Also, I'm jealous that you could live so close to Whole Foods ;-).

I'm not voting bc Lo isn't here yet but my plan is to walk way more. I hate driving and am nervous doing it anyway, but I'm with you- walking seems so much easier. What you describe sounds perfect- easy driving or parking, but a few minutes walk to big conveniences. I would def choose that.

We are in a more residential neighborhood of a city- def still city but we have parking and can drive if need be. Only one car though.

Just the other day I was using Google Maps, and I was shocked that a walk I do all the time is a mile. That said, I totally use the stroller or wear her. A 1/2 mile isn't very far to me.

I love walking everywhere but I'm biased because I moved to a city specifically for that reason. I find it incredibly easy to get out and do things, and was out and about almost every day on my maternity leave, whereas my friends in driving places were more isolated and stayed indoors for days on end (not that they had to, some of it is just personality). I never even used our stroller, I much preferred wearing. I have a high lazy factor and this lifestyle works for me. :-)

Wouldn't you usually have to deal with a stroller once you reached your destination by car anyway? I live in a residential neighborhood of a city and I much prefer walking. I drive short distances (1.5-3mi) bc it's faster than waiting for public transit, and take the subway for longer distances if it goes there.

I would never move somewhere where I had to drive to go to the store...we walk almost everywhere, and I love it! It's so much easier than dealing with the carseat, parking, traffic, not being able to get to LO if I"m driving, etc. Plus, I feel like walking outside in teh stroller is a much better experience for LO than being in a carseat all the time.

Hi bees! We're officially TTC and looking for a house and a question has come up that I have not been able to find a good answer to: is it easier to leave the house with the kid(s) by car or stroller?

We are looking to buy a house and prefer a walkable neighborhood because we have always lived in one. It just seems so much easier to be able to walk a 1/4 mile to the store than to have to drive.

My mom thinks this is unrealistic with kids: she says we are going to want to drive everywhere. I think getting everyone and everything into the car and back out again would be a bigger pain. Plus I have always hated the idea of living in a car dependent neighborhood.

What do moms who live in walkable urban areas think? Especially if you used to walk everywhere before kids? Do you still value being in a walkable neighborhood?

*We live in the urban area of a suburb, so we still have two cars, parking etc. Just also can chose to live in more or less walkable neighborhoods. We are looking at homes/condos that would be 7 minute walk from Whole Foods and coffee shop, etc., versus homes that would be a ten minute drive from anything.
