@DesertDreams88: that story is crazy lolol I'm glad you had someone who could buy undies for you. I'm a high school teacher and the assholes who designed my (new) school didn't think to add many bathrooms, so bleeding through my pants is a constant concern. I'm wondering how my period will be when I get it finally postpartum.

@SweetiePie: Have you considered a Mirena IUD? I used to have really heavy periods, not as bad as you’re describing, but almost. My periods after getting the IUD we’re almost nonexistent. Better than taking pills every day for sure!

@SweetiePie: this sounds like it must have been scary. I wonder if it’s worth checking in with your GI doc, I think IBD can affect period severity!

I haven’t seen a dr about this specifically yet and I’m pregnant again but yeah - the periods I had pp have been much higher flow then before giving birth, also to the point of making me nervous and needing to change within an hour. If I was done done I would also consider ablation.

@BlueWolverine: glad to hear you've had good success with the ablation. My (loose) plan is to have my tubes tied/removed (whatever the dr suggests) and an ablation after this baby. My mom had an ablation a few years ago and was lucky enough that it stopped all bleeding for her (she was at the beginning of menopause and had been bleeding for months!).

@SweetiePie: Glad you're doing better!

I had this same problem after LO2. I also had my tubes removed and did not love the idea of going back on birth control. My doctor recommended uterine ablation. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. It was done in my doctor's office. Had some cramping that day. Ever since, I have some slight spotting every month. Sometimes need a pantyliner for a day, but that's it. Highly recommend.

@SweetiePie: glad to hear you are ok!
I'll post my story for posterity.... anyway, 2nd-3rd cycle postpartum. Put in a normal tampon at around 7:30am. By 10:30, I could feel massive wetness and I started getting really nervous, but since I'm a teacher it's not easy to just leave and go to the bathroom to check. I held out until 11:15, got to the bathroom, had soaked through the tampon, 2 pantiliners, my underwear, AND my leggings.... thank God I was wearing a tunic! I literally threw away my underwear because it was soaked, and I rinsed and balled up my pants, but then.... DILEMMA. What do I wear? I couldn't wear just my tunic! Especially with needing layers to prevent more blood from showing. I walked back to my classroom (kids were at lunch), panicking. Luckily my coworker was dashing out for lunch so I asked her to BUY UNDERWEAR for me..... yes. She did. Thank God for her!

@Anagram: hi! Thanks for checking (I know others did too, but I’m on a phone lol).

So basically they didn’t find anything. And naturally everything slowed down after I got there. It was heavy but didn’t look like I was bleeding out like it did in the morning.
Whatever, I called my doc for an appointment just to check on things. They told me to go to the ER. I did. I think it was overkill but 🙃 it happened.
They gave me fluids. Did some blood and urine tests. Did an ultrasound and pelvic exam. Everything looked normal. She said it could just be hormonal and to follow up with my doc. Which is all I wanted in the first place so I should’ve listened to my gut.

My husband is going away for a few days today so when he’s back I’ll go to the doc. As much as I hate the idea of going on bcp again, especially since I got my tubes removed for that reason, to not have to take anything, I’d rather do that than bleed all over the place and be stuck in my house for 2 days every month. So I’m going to see if I can just try that for a few months. Loestrin periods were 👌🏼

I hope you’re able to get some answers! Did you ever have a D&C after a prior miscarriage (or any other reason)? I had one shortly a few days after I had my second baby (due to retained tissue post birth) and that caused some uterine scarring that caused heavy/clotty irregular periods once my period returned. It doesn’t sound as heavy as yours, but it was much heavier than normal for me and I bled through pants occasionally on my 2-3 day. I ended up having another D&C to clean up my lining due to the scarring and that helped somewhat. I’ve also heard ablation is a treatment for heavy periods but that’s generally only performed if you’re certain you want no further children. Good luck!

@SweetiePie: I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. please update when you can. I have had terrible periods since my second baby. I had to learn what an "S+" tampon is and still worry its not enough. This after having been a two-day, 4 tampon use period kind of girl my entire life. First baby was IVF and then I got pregnant again after just one quasi period. I haven't called a doctor about mine. I'm so curious about yours and hope its something that can have an easy fix.

Thanks for your input ladies.
My doctors office called back and advised I go to the ER purely for the loss of blood. They were afraid I would lose consciousness at home since it hasn’t slowed down.
I’m getting IV fluids now and they’re doing some bloodwork.
I’m not scared or anything I just want to figure it out.

Oof no ideas just wanted to send a virtual hug! I got the copper IUD between kids and had crazy heavy periods and it was awful so I can sort of relate. I use a diva cup now and would totally recommend going forward but yeah, definitely see your doc and let us know what's up. So sorry!

My mother in law had this - she ended up having uterine cancer but obviously this is rare. Before they found out they did some endometrial ablations because apparently that can help with the heavy bleeding

Yes, I have had it for 2-3 cycles 2 different times in my life. First time was when my platelets were low (less clotting makes the menstrual blood a lot thinner/more liquidy and less contained in a tampon).

Recently, I had 2 more nightmare periods exactly as you describe--major "flooding", bleeding through super plus tampons and a pad within an hour. And it was because i'd had surgery, and the opioid painkiller I was prescribed made me throw up so I switched to Aleve and was on it for 2 weeks. Since it's a blood thinner, the same thing happened. Not fun.

I believe that worsening bleeding is a possible side effect of a tubal. I would get things checked out to make sure there isn't something going on but that would be my guess.

If it's something you just have to deal with I would look into a menstrual cup. They hold way more than tampons and would at least help alleviate worry of leaking.

Try some hydrogen peroxide on your seat, should take the blood right out.

Sorry you're dealing with this!

Yep. Similar story also - loestrin for many years then IVF. This started happening to me about a year ago, getting progressively worse until I now can’t leave the house during the first few days of my period bc of the pain and also a risk of a bleed through. I’ve have a million tests/ultrasounds and everything is ok, though I do have PCOS (which I’ve dealt with for 20 years). I’m getting mirena next month at my doctor’s suggestion to try and control the bleeding.

I already have a call in to my doc and waiting for a call back.

TMI alert.

Has anyone had SEVERE menstrual bleeding and found out there was a reason for it? Like, I’m using ultra tampons (2 levels above a Tampax super) and a pad and usually day 2-3 of my period I’m bleeding through both in AN HOUR. Like to my jeans. I just bled through to my car seat. It’s pretty significant. Today also lots of clots, like I’ve had 2 miscarriages and you’d think I was miscarrying (NOT POSSIBLE so don’t even suggest that lol).

Backstory - I’ve always had normal periods. Was on BC (loestrin) for years. Went off for IVF for both of my boys. After the 2nd baby I had tubes removed (for birth control purposes). Ever since then my periods are way heavier than usual and seem to be getting progressively worse over the last few months. Today put in a ultra tampon, put on a pad as backup, go to CVS and realize 20 mins in that I feel wet. I had wads of napkins in the car so I sat them on the seat just in case not thinking I’d actually need it for the one mile ride home and I soaked through those to my beige leather car seat too. Fun!
