@glimmersnaps: Uh, yeah. That is like my county. There aren't any "consignment" or thrift shops in my city at all. I have to dry out to other cities to even find a Goodwill or something, and then the few clothes they have I can find cheaper NEW on sale! i.e a used Carter's thing could be $3-4! Yeah and sweaters that are like
My sister has found some great stuff at a Catholic thrift shop in her town, so we've gotten some great (even new) stuff from there. But I almost find it pointless for me unless I happen upon a thrift shop by chance.

I've gotten a few things on Zulily, but other than that, all of LO's clothes will be second-hand. I'm so frugal there is no way that I will pay full price for anything he will wear for only a few months. Heck, even my maternity clothes are from a consignment store.

Absolutely! No way am I going to pay $20+ for one Baby Gap onesie when I can find it for $3 at a used kids store. The stores are pretty picky about things looking new, so I'm always happy. He is just going to grow out of it in a matter of months anyway!

We did get a lot of hand me downs, but he is rapidly catching up to his cousins who are a year older- so second-hand kids stores and sales racks are where I go.

Yeah, I love resale and consignment shops for my daughter and for me. Especially for babies, who grow out of clothing so fast. I'm more willing to spend real money on myself, when I know I can wear something basically forever. But my baby will just grow out of it, and she'll probably get it filthy or full of holes anyway. So I mix cheap but cute carter's stuff with sale finds from good stores and fun resale clothing. I prefer nice brands for her, but I'm unlikely to find them worth it new.

Today I spent $8 dollars on a pair of unworn shoes. Go home to look it up and find that they retail for $40. Score.

We had lots of hand-me-downs from friends but most of DS's clothes have come from the clearance rack. My mom has bought most of his clothes. She's a really good deal finder and has great taste.

This season (18 mos size for fall/winter) is the first that I didn't have enough pre-bought for him. I've gotten him a couple things at consignment shops, but I don't find their prices much better than clearance. The other day I saw a sweater for $38 and t-shirts for $12 at a consignment shop... really?!

Most of our stuff is brand new. I'd love gently used hand me downs and while we've gotten a few, it's not much. I've purchased a couple almost new looking items at a consignment sale but that's it. I scour the clearance racks at baby gap and old navy :)

I have never bought baby clothes off of Craigslist, but we still have mostly used clothes. My niece is almost exactly one year older than my little girl, so we have a lot of her old clothes. Also, there is a consignment sale in my area twice a year that is AWESOME. last spring I bought all of her spring/summer clothes and this fall I bought all of her fall/winter clothes. The prices and quality are amazing... some are new with tags. I end up spending close to $200 each time but it is worth it.

I am very picky when it comes to consignment shops, but if I find gently/rarely worn stuff I"m nto against getting it! I got some brand new fleece sleepers recently that still had tags on them for $3!

I wear used clothes so baby probably will too! The only person who would pass hand me downs on to us had a girl, completely different seasons, and we don't know what we're having. Plus I think most of what she had was hand-me-downs through many generations so I don't know how much of it is in good condition.

I bought 2 onesies at a thrift store for $.50 each. I'm sure I'll keep trying to find stuff that is not obviously worn, if anything just to limit purchases!

I am SUPER picky about used stuff...I get weirded out if it shows any signs of wear. My mom says I am snobby but maybe I'll be different with LO#2?

To humor her, I went with her to a pretty nice baby consignment shop and I actually got some super cute Juicy Couture and Baby Gap stuff for around $4-$8 each:). I don't like when, for example, used dresses from BG are missing the diaper cover I know they're supposed to have, etc., but this place had some nice excellent-condition items. With the diaper covers:)

My mom was proud of me, lol:)

I got inspired by this today!!! I searched craigslist but people had insane prices...not in a good way. Most were pictures of clothes that looked very 1993 and they wanted $50 for 20 pieces? I don't think so!

I did find a 120 piece set, mostly somewhat new carters for $40. So I e-mailed but I have to drive kind of far to get them.

I always keep my eyes peeled for used clothes at thrift shopa, and the mom swap FB group I am on. The only hand me downs I got were clothes my mom saved of mine (about 50 smocked vintage dresses). I need to get her ready for fall/winter, and expect to buy a lot secondhand. My sisters in San Fran have access to awesome kids consignment, so they sent a lot of things when she was born. My mom also looks at goodwill and yardsales near her and grabs what she knows I would like. I figure, I have 3 younger sisters who will likely have kids eventually, and she might have a little sister someday so I plan on reusing whatever I have.

we didn't get really ANY hand me downs! so sad. the little girls I nanny for, their mom had literally gotten rid of ALL their baby things the week before I announced I was pregnant. She felt so bad! but also said their clothes had been through the ringer and she wouldn't have wanted to pass them on anyway.

I have a friend who has a daughter about 2 years older than mine will be, same seasons. I shopped her closet recently and got some adorable clothes for cheap! I hate craigslist in our area only because people are so shady - they say they'll meet and don't, or have items not like the ones listed, etc. I love our facebook mom swap group though - lots of cute deals!

Absolutely! A couple of my friends have two boys so their boy clothes are really worn out. But one friend has one 3 year old boy who is a total neat freak. GOLD MINE! She sends me all his clothes as he outgrows them and then I send them back as Maddox outgrows them. I'm a little neurotic with keeping clothes in pristine condition and line dry everything, so she's getting her clothes back in like-new condition too.

There is a kids second hand shop in town that had all clothes 25 cents last week, I grabbed a ton! I've also been garage sale-ing and found some awesome bargains. My favorite was $1.00 for all the clothes you could put in a bag. I ended up with over 50 pieces of clothing for $2.00. I don't buy things that aren't in good condition or look too worn, but I'm happy to hunt and get a bargain!

I bought a few outfits on super clearance last week (70-80% off) that I'll use next winter. Then I found someone on craigslist selling baby girl clothes that matched up with when my little one is due. A few of the outfits I got were never even worn. And for $25, I think I got over 25 items, so I'm pretty happy with that. I'll wash them and they'll be ready to go!
I've also started watching for winter items to come up on Craigslist so I can fill out my 9-12 month wardrobe.
I figure the clothes are mainly for the parents anyway. Babies would be more than happy to live in onesies and pajamas 24/7. As long as it's soft and in good shape, I have no issue with secondhand clothes for the baby, since she'll only wear each item a few times before she outgrows it.

@Mrsbells: it is interesting to me that you see it this way. When I shop for myself I expect clothes to last years. I don't buy things that are trendy, but basic pieces that I can mix and match. In the last year or two I've purged all the clothes that don't fit since I've gone up a size or two depending on when i bought them. My SIL has expanded her wardrobe greatly with some of my used clothes. I think its different for babies because they outgrow things so fast. If kids clothes fit for more than 1-3 months, then I would be more picky, but even the things we have bought new only seem to get worn a dozen times before he is too big. The second hand store in our town is very picky about what they buy, so everything they sell is really like new. Once ds is old enough to know the difference, we will be buying new for him.

I haven't used anything second hand so far and don't really plan to. My SIL gave me a couple of onesies with sayings on it but they were so worn, I just put them in the donation pile.

Because of the hard water, clothes look really worn, so I just buy new on sale. If I had the option to have someone give us stuff to borrow, I'd probably pass because I'd feel badly if my son wrecked it and they expected it back. But because stuff is sooo expensive in Europe, people don't lend stuff out because they don't buy that much to begin with.
