I am using my friend's pump in style, which she received from her SIL. If you get new tubing and parts, and feel comfortable with it, go for it. My PIS is an older model but I haven't had any trouble with condensation in the tubing for the PIS. (I use a Symphony at work and get tons of condensation.)

I would be fine using a used pump if I got it from a healthy family member.

I would be fine with it, you can order almost all the parts new, right from Medela (membranes, valves, tubes, shields).

I used one from a friend for a while. It's all in how you feel about it.

If I got one from a family member whose health and hygiene I trusted, I would just buy new shields and tubing and use it. Moisture from the tubing would corrode the motor before you would really have to worry about disease transmission anyways. If the pump is properly used, it is unlikely you would get milk in the tubing.

A hospital pump is a closed system pump, meaning the motor is sealed and no milk particles can get into the motor. Some double electric pumps are closed system, like hygeia and ameda, but medela pumps are all open system. That means that particles could get into the motor and it could transmit diseases to a second user.

Ultimately it is much less risky to use a pump from someone you know, but there is still a slim possibility that it could transmit something that she/you are unaware of. Personally it is a risk I would take to save money.

My SIL gave me her Medela pump and I just switched out the parts and everything's working fine for me.

I honestly think it comes down to your own comfort level with it. If you are comfortable with cleaning and buying new parts then go for it...

They say not to reuse them because with the Medela not wing a closed system there is a chance that moisture got from the tubing into the pump mechanism which could create mold.

I rented a pump from the hospital- so it was obviously used.

I know that everywhere it says that you shouldn't use a used breastpump. But, I received it from my SIL, so obviously I know she's healthy. If I get new parts and sterilize everything, do you think this would be OK? I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. It's a Medela (I think pump in style).
