@Foodnerd81: I've always heard you should use cold water. My bags defrosted in just a few minutes under running cold water, so I never tried hot water.

@kiddosc: same, after making the mistake of taking too many bags out when I was going to be away for a day. They thaw so quickly there is no need to take them out in advance.

Is it bad to put them in hot water to defrost, btw?

I defrosted only on an as needed basis. So I would run it under cold water to defrost it and then use it right away so I was sure not to waste any.

It's 24 hours from thaw. But check with your LO - if they will drink it, it's fine. (Some babies are more sensitive to lipase than others. My DD will drink pretty much any BM.)

Bump because I was about to ask this question myself. I couldn't figure out if it was 24 hours from taking it out from freezer or 24 hours once it is thawed.

I think the definition is technically 24 hours after it has thawed out. So when there are no more ice crystals in the milk (its completely liquid) then starts the 24 hour time.

However, I will say that we didn't follow this strictly. We tried to use it around 24-48 hours.

I've read it has to be used 24 hours after it is defrosted....or is it 24 hours after it is taken out of the freezer?

And why can't we use keep it in the fridge for a few days after defrosting? I've already thrown out a few bottles because we didn't use it within 48 hours from taking it out of the freezer and I am wondering if I needed to. Sometimes it's hard to plan when we are going to need it.
