I would have been open to it, but my maiden last name is a little unusual. It's currently my middle name.

I would've considered it if my maiden name were an actual first name, but it isn't and I didn't want LO to have a weird/uncommon middle name. MIL's maiden name is Walker and we would've likely used that for a middle name if we'd had a boy.

@Applesandbananas: I have a unique maiden name and we are the only ones in the country to have it! I was proud to give my son it as a middle name but honestly he'll probably get made fun of for it. It's weird :-/

My MIL practically begged me to give LO my last name as a second middle name, it's what she did with her kids. I never changed my name when I got married and can't change it so I thought it would sound like I'm trying to give her two last names. My last name is very much a last name.

If this one is a girl, I think I'll do middle name for my sister. If we have another girl, maybe she will get it? I love the idea!!

My sister did with her third and we actually planned to with LO2 but decided on a completely different name after he was born. Assuming we have another boy, we may use the name we originally planned for LO2, with my maiden name as his middle name.
I have several family members that have maiden names as middle names too. My first name is a shortened version of my grandmother's maiden name. I think it's a pretty common practice!

My sister did this with all 3 of our nieces, which is nice because our last name ended with my sister and I :( I chose to give my DS my dad's middle name. It's nice to honor family somehow if it works out!

I think it's fine in your case. I, however, would not punish LO2 with my long Russian maiden name that I couldn't wait to trade in :silly: . That in conjunction with DH's even longer Italian last name would just be cruel, lol.

If I had a decent maiden name I totally would. My cousin's middle name is our grandmother's maiden name. Actually, same on the other side as well. And a couple cousins have our grandmother's middle name, which was her mother's maiden name.

My sister did this but she did not change her last name after getting married. I opted to use a first name honoring my side of the family as DD1's middle name (my dad's side) and DD2's middle name (my mom's side).

I also considered using my mom's maiden name as a middle name. If we ever have another I will pitch it to DH.

So there is a Filipino thing

It's very common to
1. When having a child - Give the child the mom's maiden name as the middle name
2. When a women gets married she changes her original middle name to her maiden name

I believe they actually got this from being conquered by the Spanish.

I could be wrong but this is what I learned by working with Filipino people and having Filipino extended family members.

Edit :
It's in this Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filipino_name#Maternal_middle_names_and_Paternal_family_surnames

Also I want to add everyone I know with mom's maiden name as their middle name has never had any issues or complaints about it. But it's pretty common here so maybe they just think it's normal? Haha.

DH's name (and DS1's middle name) is his mother's maiden name. DS1's first name is DH's grandma's maiden name. DS2's middle name is my mom's maiden name. So to say that we like using last name's as first or middle names is an understatement. Luckily they're all pretty normal names. :)
