@FaithFertility: I would totally follow up and ask why urine collection is a routine test. I have literally never heard of that at this age. Did you get the culture back? Hopefully it was nothing or It clears up soon.

@gotkimchi: yeah that's my point. Why if you know you will never get a clean catch with a bag would that be a routine test with no other indication of infection?!

@FaithFertility: @sapphire: exactly. And a bag sample almost always will have bacteria which is why it needs to be followed up with a cath - still not what I would consider necessary in an asymptomatic kiddo. This is something I would actually consider changing doctors over, but I am really against unnecessary, non-evidence based interventions especially for my LO! I would like to give your doc the benefit of the doubt though that there was something in your LO's history that made them want to check. But I can say with certainty there is no evidence behind doing any kind of urine check for a baby for screening if they have no issues.

@MenagerieMama: I agree with you. This is weird! I've never heard of checking a routine urine at a well child check. I don't think there are any professional societies that recommend this.

Also I spoke to my brother in laws BF who is a pedictrician and he stated some offices do urine smaples to check for hydration, no concentrated urine

That is not a standard of care just to check a urine test, and bag samples are not useful at all. I don't even bother to get them if I'm concerned about a UTI. Catheter samples (or if they can pee in a collection container) are the only ways to check for a UTI. TBH I would be pretty upset about them cathing my LO for something like this if it truly was just a "routine" urine sample and no underlying concern. I have never heard of a doctor who does that. Plus if she has zero symptoms I'm not sure the motivation to treat. Does she have any kidney issues?

@catomd00: you can't get a clean sample out of a bag but you can get a clean catch with a catheter.
@FaithFertility: it's good you got it checked, untreated uti can have serious complications

DD has had two UTIs. One at 7 weeks (resulted in hospitalization) and another at 6 months. Both the main symptom was a fever. The second time around it was hard to diagnose because she was also getting over Hand Foot Mouth.

Seems weird to me that they would take a urine sample for no reason at a well baby check. I wouldn't be excited about the catheter sample, but I would rather have them test again before antibiotics. The ones they use for UTi are pretty strong.

To avoid future UTIs, I'm super careful to limit soap and bubbles in the bath and when changing dirty diapers. Lots of wipes used only once to not cross-contaminate.

Thankfully the catheter was like hair thin and only mad ever squirm and cry for a second :(

I feel you I was upset too, but what do ya do?

I believe it. I've had three: one was super painful (I was sobbing every time I had to go), one was just a constant urge, and the last one wasn't painful at all except for some mild back soreness.

I thought that there was no way to get a clean sample with a bag? I'd kind of be upset if they cath'ed my baby with no other symptoms. Typically a baby uti is accompanied by a high fever.

I don't have a LO yet, but I had a UTI that wasn't painful at all so she may not be in any pain. I went to the doctor feeling tired and just off, and after taking a urine sample they diagnosed me with a UTI. I was feeling much better after a few days on antibiotics.

I didn't go through this with my LO but I did have one during this pregnancy that was not painful, even though they are usually extremely painful for me. They say that can happen with babies and pregnant women and I would have had trouble believing it if it didn't happen to me. So I just wanted to say it's totally possible she isn't uncomfortable!

At DD 9 month check up they routinely take a pee sample in a collection bag, apparently it came back with traces of bacteria common in a UTI, so we went back for a clean sample with catheter to make sure before she starts antibiotics....we will get results tomorrow.

In the mean time she shows no signs no fever or discomfort..
If your LO had a UTI how could you tell?
I know how painful they are when I have had them so I pray she isn't feeling that?!
In the mean time I am changing her 24/7 using no soap in bath, if I wash her hair I am letting her stand up and quickly rinse off....lol
