@2littlepumpkins: yup! I guess I had some rare kind of bacteria (?) and a lot of antibiotics are contraindicated during pregnancy, so I had to have liquid antibiotics for a whole week! I was in the hospital for a few days and then they sent me home hooked up to an iv bag- it was pretty crappy!

@pachamama: I was 28 weeks, and had a rare bacteria, so that may account for some of it!

@Greentea: the head obstetrician called to say my lower uti really isn't a risk to baby at all- the uterus and bladder aren't connected too closely. She said upper UTIs that become kidney infections are a concern really only late in pregnancy bc they can cause contractions and preterm birth.
She found out what happened also- the lab didn't recognize the new midwife's name and therefore was lazy and didn't send it to the right office. She's as frustrated as me but at least the issue is resolved!

@2PeasinaPod: she said she didn't have symptoms and I got the impression that it was just part of a standard pregnancy urine screen? I've always hated the no news is good news policy though.

@Greentea: wow just for a UTI? They're so common. I've been told I could end up admitted if it spread to my kidneys but not bladder.

@kiddosc: You still wouldn't call anyway? If I were having symptoms of a UTI, and didn't hear anything, I'd call to find out the results.

Again, not saying that she doesn't have a right to be furious, but I guess I'm to paranoid to go with the "no news is good news" approach. I've always called if someone hasn't followed up with me for my own peace of mind.

OMG I would be so mad! My OB freaked when I had a UTI and I actually had to be admitted- if it spreads to kidneys it is very serious- so they had me stay in the hospital and on IV antibiotics for a week!

The "head" doctor called me at 7pm to apologize and explain. My office did not receive the lab work til today so there was a electronic record miscommunication. They are as pissed as me and have called a bunch so I feel a lot better. The PA said it's only a concern if I get kidney infection symptoms which I have none. I'll talk to the OB tomorrow. She knows I am mad and understands completely! Hopefully this never happens again!!

@bluestriped bee: My OB office tests four things on the strip test and.if that is positive then they culture the urine. I get UTI like symptoms a lot in this pregnancy so I was honestly shocked that I had a positive culture (even though this is my 3rd this year, ugh.) Glad they caught yours even though I could understand feeling like it's too late since that may have been what landed you in the hospital. (I know you aren't blaming them, just saying.) I'm just trusting that t he macrobid is working since I usually have very clear symptoms and now based on symptoms I just can't tell!

@2littlepumpkins: So I'm in the hospital and they are giving me macrobid, too. They said it was found in my urine and that it was strep, but said I am not group B step positive. One of the nurses mentioned that they think that's why my water broke but I have been unable to confirm this with other nurses or my doctors. I do know that they had to have my sample cultured to find out I had strep. Not sure if this is a standard test that is done at my OB office. From what I know, I thought they test for proteins in my urine everytime I come in using a test strip test. I know there are test strips that can tell you if you have a UTI but I wonder if other infections of the bladder need to be cultured to find out.

I'm not freaked out that I had a Bladder infection. I had no signs of the usual symptoms of a UTI like the burning sensation or the blood in urine. I guess for me I'm glad I went to the hospital for leaking fluid and caught it early enough to be put on bed rest. I will be sensitive to those who suffered a loss that if I had lost my babies because this was not caught, I might be up in arms.
I will say that as a scientist, I know the test strips have a certain level of sensitivity and you can only test for certain things. You can't test for everything. There might be signs to lead you to believe you might have something and more tests needed. I will believe that my urine tests were negative and which is why my bladder infection was not caught until I went to the hospital.
I found this link to what they look for in my urine when I see the OB. http://americanpregnancy.org/prenatal-testing/urine-test/
What stands out to me is that it says higher levels of protein could mean a UTI. So I will believe my protein levels were not high enough to cause for alarm.

@2PeasinaPod: that's what I was thinking too.

My office only calls if something is wrong.but I understand mistakes do happen. I'm finishing macrobid right now and they told me in the office my urine looked fine and only cultured it because I had slight symptoms and a positive leukocyte AZO test. It still took almost a week for a result too. Not 22 days.but I honestly believe this could.happen at any office.

@2PeasinaPod: In my office, no news is supposedly good news. So I would never call for results.

@pachamama: Definitely complain. They need to have a back-up in place for these type of situations. There's really nothing they can do to make your situation better, but you can help to make sure it doesn't happen again. And they'll probably be more vigilant in the future.

How many times did you call them to request the results during that 22 day period? While I think it's ridiculous that they didn't call you, mistakes happen. You said that the nurse manager was very apologetic. If you called 4 or 5 times during that period for results and no one ever got back to you, I'd think about switching practices, but if you never called them, then I would let it go.

Nurse from OB office just called me (after I messaged them on the portal and called/harnessed get my results ....) to inform me I have a UTI. This was tested 22 days ago!! I was 9 weeks, I'm 13 now. 12 week ultrasound was great. I had absolutely no symptoms whatsoever and feel perfectly fine now. I already started my antibiotics.
I am BEYOND pissed my doctors never called to tell me I had a UTI. The nurse was very apologetic and basically said it was an electronic database mishap because my practice has two offices. I almost want to switch practices. Am I overreacting?
