@Ms. RV: Tricare would be way better. My BIL is a lt colonel in the Air Force so he and my sister and their kids have always had Tricare. They live in a military town, so they've mostly been pleased.

@Ms. RV: Yeah our's is a solid 40-45 minute drive as well. DH went to the service academy, so DOD healthcare was all he knew for the longest time and when we got on my private insurance at my job, he was floored by how awesome it was to have just...coverage.

@Anagram: I think if he isn't feeling better by Saturday I will push him to go to urgent care.

@gingerbebe: The nearest VA ER is forty five to an hour away. We also live in an area with one of the largest vet populations, so I can only imagine the wait there. He is appealing his discharge to be retired instead, which would make him eligible for Tricare. So hoping for that!!!

Yeah my husband used to just go straight to the VA ER. It was always a huge long wait and most of the time they just gave him 600mg ibuprofen and the big Tylenols and told him to wait it out. And don't get me started on the 9 months of back and forth to get his ankle surgery scheduled (which we had to drive 2 hours away for and spend $500 in hotels) - only to find out after they opened him up that he'd been misdiagnosed and had gout, not a bony bone growth.

Needless to say we are super pumped about our Kaiser coverage.

@Ms. RV: yeah, that's seriously terrible. They should be ashamed. They should have to reimburse you the cost of going to urgent care. BTW, if it's pneumonia I think you should actually go to urgent care.

OH is a service-disabled veteran and is therefore entitled to healthcare through the Veterans Administration. He called yesterday because he had been sick since Sunday (so four days) and couldn't get a hold of anyone. Then he sent his a PCP an online message, and was told that if he was still sick on Monday to call back. He is fairly sure he has pnuemonia (he has had it before) so he called the VA back. They told him his PCP isn't in until Monday, so he can't be seen. Not "here is this other doctor" or "try this other VA center". Ugh. I am so frustrated with the VA right now. If this the VA after they went through a shakeup, I can see how people died waiting for appointments in the past.
