We went to Samoset Resort on the Ocean for a conference last February and it was beautiful and I kept telling DH "Man, this would be amazing in the summer". My other suggestion is Ocean Isle Beach, NC. I'm from up there--most underrated &amp; beautiful place ever!</p> <p>Maine: we went to North Haven Island a few years ago and it's pretty cool! I think Deer Isle is supposed to be cool, too? Islands are pretty awesome. I also really like that whole area near Rockland (you get the ferry from Rockland to NHI, and there's a fair amount to do in Rockland)... Wiscasset is also very cute. There are a lot of great places near Acadia--I wouldn't stay in Bar Harbor, but a lot of the small villages near there (Southwest and Northeast Harbor are two... i think?) are really lovely and there's tons of outdoor and indoor stuff to do with Acadia and Bar Harbor nearby. For me the great thing about driving up to Maine from the north shore is that there's so much to do along the way... stop at outlets in Freeport, museum/really good restaurants in Portland, and go to the [awesome] museum at Bowdoin (in Brunswick).
